Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Syd Buffman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Syd thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From a young age, I knew I was an artist and always envisioned myself pursuing a creative path. Both of my parents are professional artists and so by example, I knew that was something I could do for a living. I’ve always had a strong interest in nature and considered a career in science as well. I love being a perfumer because it blends science and art together.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a perfumer and artist, known for making mixed media work that combines poetry and visual art with perfume. I am the founder and creator of SYD Botanica, a scent studio that officially launched last October. I feel so lucky to be able to bring all of my passions together in the creation of my fragrances.
I started my career in graphic design. Working with clients in the beauty, skincare and fragrance industries sparked my fascination with the art of scent design. The idea of perfume as wearable poetry resonated with me and continues to inspire my work today.
A sense of unfulfillment with my 9 to 5 designer life urged me to pursue other passions. Immersed in herb school during my free time, I explored the history and lore of plants, drawing connections for myself between nature, the human body, and the mystical.
Inspired by the poetry of nature and guided by my intuition, I delved deeper into alchemy, learning from experienced practitioners. This transformative journey changed my life and allowed me to merge my love for plants, design, and magic.
In 2018 I met my mentor, legendary perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. I am incredibly grateful for the time I was able to spend learning from her.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is witnessing the joy and emotional responses people experience when they encounter my perfumes. I find it truly captivating when scents evoke memories from the past and I love it when people openly share their stories and impressions with me. The intricate interplay between scent and the mind is endlessly fascinating. Perfume and scent preference are so deeply personal and intimate.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My ultimate goal is to create fragrances that not only make people feel good but also empower them to embrace their authentic selves.
