We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Suzie Gamboa. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Suzie below.
Suzie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
I would lean into my intuition more often. Coming from a scientific background made it easy to research all day and every day. While, yes, research is important, so is action! Looking back, if I’d taken more imperfect action I might be doing the work I love now, a lot sooner.
Suzie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Being passionate about the environment has always made me chase something larger than myself and have the desire to align my work with positive climate impact. This fueled my decision to pursue a Master’s in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. During my final semester interning with the City of El Paso’s Office of Resilience and Sustainability, I learned graphic design as a tool to engage communities and inspire change. From that point on, the design seed was planted in me.
After graduating, I moved to Austin, Texas. I struggled to find work within the sustainability space. As I was sitting in my 9-5, contemplating my next move, I decided to jump into entrepreneurship. I started as a freelance graphic designer and worked on various projects ranging from stationery to logo design before honing in on branding.
My comprehensive understanding of the art and science of environmentalism sets me apart from others. I can translate scientific and technical language around climate change.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Build relationships with like minded people who share similar values. For me, that feels more natural than all the other marketing and sales advice I’ve come across.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect is using my creative skills to help others shape culture and inspire change! Climate doom is definitely a thing. The negative effects of climate change are increasing, but I like to channel my climate anxiety into action. Helping entrepreneurs who use their businesses as a vehicle for change brings me hope.
