Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Summer Spillman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Summer, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The sore spots are the ones that need to be worked on. If you avoid myofascial therapy because some areas are tender, you’re missing the point. That doesn’t mean to overwork those areas, but they must be addressed so the tissue heals properly. When a patient does home therapy on themselves, such as using a massage tool, they recover so much faster from their musculoskeletal injuries.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started out learning about environmental health, taking every class available on the topic at the University where I started my education. That was over 25 years ago. Then I started working for a chiropractor and acupuncturist from South Korea. From there, I went on to chiropractic school. I’ve also dealt with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis since I was 20 years old, which led me to exploring nutrition and functional medicine, two of the most important topics in health and wellness. I was ignored and mistreated as a patient for so long, I stopped trusting doctors. They didn’t listen to me or go the extra mile in their studies and I suffered for years. In my practice, I make sure my patients feel heard. I really, REALLY, listen. And I make sure that they understand that their symptoms aren’t in their head. What sets me apart from other doctors? Well, I have seven science degrees. I’m also not afraid to speak up on my social media platforms about fascism, social justice, and climate justice…and I have since the beginning, especially when I don’t see other doctors doing this. And they really aren’t. They carry on like nothing is happening and I’ve never been the type to bury my head in the sand. I think it’s important that people know what I stand for, and that I’m not some closet megalomaniac looking down my nose at patients because they are of a certain color, or are from another land, or aren’t what people consider to be “normal”. We are mammals doing our best to destroy one of the most beautiful rocks in outer space, and none of this is normal.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
I’ve had almost zero capital investment. I didn’t have wealthy parents or a trust fund, and I haven’t taken out any business loans. I’ve never once paid for an advertisement. If someone comes to me for help, it’s because they heard about me from someone else. There are so many doctors who use scripts and proven methods to “sell” their patients. They pay thousands of dollars for business advice. Well, I don’t like scripts, I like being myself. And I want my patients to feel as though they can also be themselves when I’m in the room. If that means I won’t have the numbers that others are seeking, well, so be it.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There is a philosophy circulating about “Eating the Frog”. Essentially, what his means is to do the most annoying or least desirable task in your day first thing. I can tell you that this saves time, worry, and ultimately helps you get more accomplished in your day. Time is our most precious thing we can give, it must be used wisely. We only have so many days until our number is up, it’s best to get on with things.
