We were lucky to catch up with Sue Klahne recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sue thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my most meaningful projects was creating a mural for an inpatient crisis hospital. I am passionate about mental health & addiction awareness & enjoy sharing my gifts with related charities & causes.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a major in graphic design, I spent a few years working as an art director for a local advertising agency. I took some years off to raise children and continued to do some freelance work. After the kids were grown, I picked up a paintbrush and rekindled my love for painting again. I believe that my design background has strongly influenced my creative style. Working primarily in acrylic and resin, I’m most well known for my aerial perspective of painting the ocean. My style is contemporary coastal and reflects my love of the various shades of blue associated with the sea. I also enjoy painting local flora and fauna associated with coastal South Florida.
For reasons close to my heart, I am a passionate advocate for mental health and addiction awareness. I often use my art as a platform for discussion and give back my time and resources to organizations affiliated with mental health.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After losing my son, Justin, to mental illness less than three years ago, I have had work to rekindle my desire to paint again. I have used this time of grieving to heal, reflect and prioritize. I’m slowly beginning to paint again, which is an important component of my personal journey and wellbeing.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Ultimately I paint because it makes me happy. My paintings often reflect the way I may be feeling during a particular moment in time. It is my hope that the viewer of my work can sense the same serenity I feel during the creative process.
