We recently connected with Steven Silver and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Steven thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The greatest risk I ever took, was leaving my families jewelry business, where I had a nice income and worked with mostly family and left without any preparation, plan, clients or idea of what I wanted to do I also had three (3) small children at home. However it was the greatest thing I ever did after figuring out what I wanted to do. I beat the pavement, made a zillion phone calls and presentations to get where we are are today, which is the most successful Jewelry Appraisal Business in Houston Texas

Steven, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I gradated fromTthe University of Texas at Austin with hopes of becoming a lawyer. At that time my family had decided to open a jewelry store and asked me if I wanted to help part time. I really did not want to work that summer as I had planned on starting law school, but decided to help out a little. Well I fell in love with jewelry, gems, gold etc and could not stop reading and getting educated. I then studied and completed Gemology degree for The Gemological Institute of America and the rest is history, 44 years later.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When I left my families business, I had no personal credit. I applied for an SBA loan and tried to come up with the best estimate of expenses I was going to incur. I was way off in my estimations and would suggest doing as much homework as you can to determine what your actual expenses will be and be sure you have a bank account to sustain you for a period of time, to be successful.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I honestly believe that my personality and knowledge was able to help me build my reputation in the market. I believe that the client come first and foremost and being friendly goes a long way. My motto has been “Under Promise and Over Deliver”.
