Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Steven Knoworries. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Steven, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
To learn and continually grow in the art of filmmaking, I’ve placed myself in spaces where I often learn from individuals who don’t share my background, passions, or advocacy. While the art of storytelling through film is an exhilarating endeavor, it’s clear that black filmmakers face a disproportionate lack of learning opportunities. Limited resources and representation in traditional film education can be discouraging, leaving us with few avenues for skill development and mentorship. Recognizing that this craft isn’t universally accessible and success isn’t guaranteed, I embrace the nature of the business. My approach has been self-investment. I consistently green-light my own projects, enabling me to collaborate with actors, brands, and businesses that require advocacy. It’s more fulfilling to nurture artists and brands with the care and resources from my dedicated efforts.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I work as a Film Director and Film Producer nationwide creating high-quality commercials and music films for emerging independent music artists and black-owned businesses. These clients often don’t have large production budgets but know the power of quality-produced visuals that have the same standard and vision as larger budget productions. I do this because there is a need to help catapult their brand and image into prominence with my directed and produced visual creations whether it be a music film with big lights, large production teams, makeup, wardrobe, photography and set decoration, my job is to provide a one-of-a-kind production most artist and brands only believed could come from a major Hollywood studio or recording label.
The true essence of my artistry emerges from understanding how to transform a $10,000 investment into the visual equivalent of $50,000. This isn’t just about filmmaking; it’s about crafting a unique experience that elevates brands and artists to the forefront of recognition. As the creative force behind the scenes, I turn aspirations into reality, proving that exceptional execution and a visionary approach can reshape the landscape of storytelling. This is more than my profession – it’s my vocation.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to advocate for the underdog, the underserved, the underrecognized, and the underappreciated by highlighting their stories, gifts, and talents to the forefront of their target audience. With Technology and the digital tools we have today, I believe together we can honestly create anything we desire. So I’m driven by the advocacy but fueled by opportunities that today’s filmmakers have in the palm of their hands.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
From the perspective of a black filmmaker, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative lies in the ability to reshape narratives and amplify voices that have been historically marginalized. It’s the power to tell stories that reflect the richness of our culture, experiences, and struggles. As a black artist, I find immense satisfaction in creating work that resonates deeply with my community, while also challenging misconceptions and fostering understanding among diverse audiences. This journey of artistic expression becomes a vessel for empowerment, representation, and ultimately, a means to contribute to a more inclusive and just world.
