We recently connected with Steven Jasik and have shared our conversation below.
Steven, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I had wanted to start my own company for many years, mostly for the allure of being my own boss, and the clout of being a business owner. After many business ideas, business plans, and even failed attempts, I felt the need to step back and reflect. I realized that if I’m going to be successful, the business needs to be something that I’m passionate and knowledgeable about, and not necessarily what is trendy at the time. The passion aspect of owning a business is really important. If it’s not something your passionate about, you can find yourself bored, not interested, and you might end up being your company’s own worst enemy by not giving it the attention it deserves. I have been a musician for 3 decades, and played in many bands throughout the years. I have been a recording artist, and a live performer. I have a love for music that I will always keep with me. It made sense that I would create a brand of guitar strings, and start a company in the music industry. After a couple years of research and preparation, I made it a reality, and my passion project is now a business that I’m proud of.

Steven, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Samurai Strings is a new brand of Guitar Strings. We officially launched in September of 2021. Our strings provide excellent tone, and hold their tune. We use a cryogenic process on the core wire to provide additional strength and stability, which gives the player reliable strings that they can count on. We take pride in being a small company that stands behind the everyday musician. We want to bring attention and encouragement to the musicians that are out there giving their all. The ones playing gigs in the middle of the week, saving their money to record their next EP, and even the ones that just enjoy sitting in the back yard jamming. There is some amazingly talented musicians out there that aren’t getting their songs played on the radio or touring as a national act. To me it’s the effort and drive that the everyday musicians have that make a difference. We try to acknowledge and encourage that, and bring attention to them for it.

How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
We sell our products on our own site. We do have listings on Ebay and Amazon, but we have found that we are not very successful on those other platforms. I believe that is due to the fact that our products are our own brand, and Amazon and Ebay shoppers are typically looking for specific brands, and not simply browsing. I think that as we build our brand recognition they will be more useful to us, but right now we are most successful with our own website, and our social media accounts.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media has been our best source of new clients. We run ads which really helps, of course, but personal interaction on social media has proven to be the method that works best for us.
