We recently connected with Stephanie White and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I got started in the healthcare field as a Companion Aide for a Home Care Agency in 2002 at the age of 18. I wasn’t certified so I sat with elderly clients, cooked their meals, and supervised them to make sure they took their medication on time and made sure they avoided falls. The recruitment process was very simple. I applied, went in for the interview, attended orientation and started working with my first client the following week.
I knew for a while I wanted to work in the healthcare field, but at the time I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I started there. I loved working with the elderly, but I knew I wanted and needed more than to be a Companion Aide. It was my entry into the medical field.
While working that job I enrolled in school to obtain my degree in Medical Administration. After graduation I got a job working as a Medical Billing Specialist. I loved it and I did that up until I enrolled in nursing school. Funny thing is I avoided nursing school for so long because I was terrified of blood. I got over it graduated with honors from my nursing program.
I am very happy with my first job in the healthcare industry. I developed a passion for working with the elderly. This led to my inspiration of wanting to move forward with nursing school. Later on in 2010, I opened my own Home Care Agency to provide personal care services to the elderly population.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a Registered Nurse and have been in the healthcare industry for 20 years. I started my first business in 2010. It was a home care agency for elderly and disabled individuals. From there I started an agency that provides group home and supportive in-home services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. I am also a Co-Arthur of the Anthology “Words of Wisdom for The Heart and Soul.”
The idea of Scrub Appeal, a healthcare uniform supplier was birthed in 2020. For over a year I researched, gathered information, took a course and followed the trends of the latest uniforms before actually launching. I became more familiar with the different styles, materials, manufacturers, and the colors most facilities in my area were requiring their staff to wear. On October 23, 2021 my husband Tremaine and I opened the doors to our brick and mortar location in Chesapeake, VA. At Scrub Appeal we offer a variety of styles, colors, and sizes for both men and women.
I am very proud to have launched Scrub Appeal during the pandemic and to still be going strong. We were able to provide uniforms, shoes, PPE, accessories, and other tools needed for healthcare professionals to safely and comfortably perform their jobs. In a year’s time, we have shipped to over 30 states, provided uniforms for training programs, a cosmetology school, spas, and several other healthcare and beauty professionals.
As a nurse myself, I know firsthand how demanding the healthcare industry can be. We want people to know that we care, we understand and we are here for you.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
You identify a problem and you solve it. We do this by providing services and products that are needed. We listen to what our customer’s needs are and we provide. Not only do we provide, but we try to make it as convenient as possible. In the healthcare industry the work hours are long. We go out to hospitals, facilities, schools and offices with scrubs, lab coats, shoes, and accessories so the staff can shop onsite. If embroidery is needed we make that happen as well. We’re a one stop uniform shop.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is providing excellent customer service. We treat every customer the way we want to be treated and also by providing an experience and atmosphere to keep customers coming back. Customers can shop anywhere for their uniforms but when they come to us we make sure they know we appreciate them and their business.
