We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stacy Tim. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stacy below.
Stacy, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My dad is my hero, well, both my mom and my dad actually. Thanks to them, I have the two passions that makeup who I am and my career, professional wrestling and art.
My dad was a huge professional wrestling fan and he never missed an episode. I grew up in South Africa, and I still live here today. I remember my dad would watch any wrestling he could find on TV, whether it was WWE, TNA or the local promotions, at the time the largest one was called WWP. He even watched all the re-runs. Unfortunately, he never got to see a wrestling show live. More than that my dad was ambitious, he was never afraid to bet on himself and try something new, he started multiple small businesses and managed to turn a lot of them into success. He was a jack of all trades that never stopped learning.
My mom on the other hand was very reserved, her passion was her family, and when she had some time to herself, she filled tons of notebooks with drawings and sketches. I remember sitting at the dining room table when I was about four or five and she handed me a notebook, so I could draw with her. I found out she had a ton of art supplies neatly tucked away in a cupboard, some of the brushes from that cupboard, I’m still using today in my own artwork.
I’m honoured to continue the journey they both started and I’m so glad that I have been influenced by their passions. If I could have half the passion and ambition my father had for everything he did, it would be enough to achieve all of my dreams.
Stacy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I guess I’ll start here, my name is Stacy Tim and I am the founder and owner of both STAND Studios and Cheap Pops Wrestling.
At STAND Studios I help small businesses achieve their dreams through branding, stunning visuals and messaging. From brand management and strategy to design, I provide all-in-one branding and graphic design solutions for businesses. As I’m a qualified graphic designer and artist, I don’t just make things look pretty, I’m able to think about the messaging and psychology behind the designs and brands to help my clients gain customers and achieve business success.
However, you might know me a bit better as the girl who provides 60-second WWE recaps on Instagram and YouTube. Through Cheap Pops Wrestling, I have been able to find some of the world’s biggest wrestling fans and build a community. I’ll admit that there are a few wrestling fans that are so passionate about their favourite wrestlers or wrestling era, that they can be a bit mean and defensive. The goal of Cheap Pops Wrestling is to create a community where wrestling fans can have fun and share their thoughts on wrestling, after all, wrestling is really fun. On my YouTube Channel, I discuss all things WWE and even have some local South African Wrestlers on the channel from time to time. It’s also great to be able to speak about wrestling from a South African point of view.
I’d also love to play my part to get South African Pro Wrestling back on the map. I’d love to see shows in larger venues and give South African pro wrestlers the spotlight they deserve.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I really love the process of creating and discovering new ways to do things, whether it’s playing with new software or discovering faster ways to process and create content, I find it all so fun. I’ve also found a lot of ways to create with limited resources.
I want to learn more and constantly improve my skills and knowledge, but a phrase that is currently being used in wrestling a lot is “Finish The Story”. My goal is to finish the story, I really want to make both Cheap Pops Wrestling and STAND Studios a success, like my dad did with all of his business ventures, I want my parents to be able to look down on everything that I have done and be proud of all I have accomplished. I need to finish the story for them. So, I guess the ultimate goal is just to do enough to know that I have made them proud.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I guess I could say something obvious, like be consistent, or focus on one segment of the market, yes, both of these things are important, but the one thing that has helped me immensely is to have empathy. Find out what clicks with your audience, good or bad and connect with your audience through that.
I found that a lot of people struggle to watch wrestling week to week as there’s just so much content constantly being produced, just wanting one wrestling promotion is about seven hours of content a week. Even the biggest wrestling fans don’t always have time to watch full shows every week. So I decided to create 60-second videos dedicated to summarizing episodes of wrestling so fans can keep up with the storylines and their favourite wrestlers.
Empathizing with your audience’s wants and needs, even those as silly as keeping up with a tv show, can really help you connect with people and grow your audience.
