We recently connected with Sofia Putrino and have shared our conversation below.
Sofia, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started my photographer career after several years of shooting for fun on a gifted film camera. My Uncle, William Anthony, is a talented professional photographer and I spent some time around his shoots as well as shooting on his Canon AE-1 that he passed down to me and found that I loved learning about light, ISO, shutter speed, etc. I gained a lot of insight and knowledge from him, and then I became mostly self taught! A ton of youtube and google and a few styled shoots in between, and suddenly I found myself taking on headshots, families, and then weddings. Photography is a ton of trial and error (well, for me at least) and I learn something new almost every time I shoot.
Looking back now, I wish I would’ve taken a photography 101 course again. I took one in college, but by the time I got back into it, I was so far removed from what I learned that I had to re-learn it all. It could have saved me a few rolls of ruined film if I had!
In terms of the most essential skills, I would say it’s being able to connect with my clients. While I certainly think you can be successful at this job if you’re not a “people person”, I do think that my personality and ability to connect with kids, adults, grandparents, etc. is a huge plus. All my sessions feel fun and carefree, and all my Weddings feel like I am part of the family. It makes it so much more enjoyable when I get to be myself and have fun too.
I think for me, the thing that has stood in the way the most is myself. It may sound odd, but we are our own worst critics, and I think that sometimes I can be too harsh on myself and my work. Imposter syndrome is real, and we are surrounded by INCREDIBLE talent in this industry and it’s tough not to see other people’s work (or follower count) and compare yourself. I work hard at reminding myself that my growth and my business is a success, even if that success looks different than someone else’s.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m a wedding photographer based in Southern California, and I’ve been photographing weddings since around 2018. What started as a creative passion quickly turned into something much deeper — I realized I wasn’t just documenting events, I was preserving some of the most meaningful, emotional, and fleeting moments in people’s lives. That responsibility and privilege is what continues to inspire my work today.
My style is rooted in romantic, timeless storytelling. I’m drawn to genuine emotion, soft light, and the in-between moments that often go unnoticed — the quiet hand squeezes, teary smiles, and subtle interactions that truly define a wedding day. While I absolutely capture the important milestones and portraits, I approach weddings with a documentary mindset, allowing moments to unfold naturally so couples can stay present and fully experience their day.
I primarily offer wedding photography coverage, along with engagement sessions and family portrait sessions. My goal is always to create imagery that feels both elevated and authentic — photographs that look beautiful today, but will feel just as meaningful decades from now.
One of the biggest problems I help solve for my clients is the stress and pressure that can come with being photographed. Many couples and families tell me they’re nervous about being in front of the camera or worried about looking stiff or unnatural. I pride myself on creating a relaxed, fun, comfortable experience where everyone can simply be themselves. I offer gentle guidance when needed, but I also step back intentionally so real moments can happen organically. The result is imagery that feels natural, fun, and true to who they are.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with and have fun with those around me. Whether it’s your grandpa at your wedding, or your toddler at your family session, I can get a laugh out of the best of them. I love my ability to bring joy to the moment and therefore the memory in the photograph.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my couples place in me. Being invited into such intimate, meaningful moments is something I never take lightly. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of documenting love stories across different backgrounds, personalities, and family dynamics, and it continues to be incredibly fulfilling. I am also incredibly proud of the business I have built and continue to run while also being a Wife, Mother, Friend, Daughter, Sister, etc.
The main thing I want potential clients and followers to know is that my approach goes beyond just beautiful photos. I care deeply about the experience — from the first conversation to delivering the final gallery. I want couples to feel supported, comfortable, and fully present on their wedding day, knowing their memories are being documented thoughtfully and intentionally.
At the heart of my brand is a simple goal: to create timeless, joyful imagery that allows couples to relive not just how their wedding day or session looked, but how it truly felt.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes – at the heart of my work is a simple but deeply meaningful goal: to freeze moments forever in the form of a photograph.
Weddings are filled with moments that are incredibly meaningful, yet fleeting. The way your partner looks at you during the ceremony, your parents’ quiet emotional reactions, the laughter with friends you don’t get to see often — these moments happen once, and then they’re gone. My mission as a wedding photographer is to preserve those moments so they can be held onto, revisited, and passed down for generations.
I truly believe that photographs are one of the only things we can keep forever. Long after the day has passed, the flowers have wilted, and the details have faded from memory, the images remain. They become part of a family’s history — something couples can look back on for years, share with future children, and hold onto as time moves forward.
That belief is what drives my creativity. I’m constantly looking for the emotion, the connection, and the quiet in-between moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. My goal isn’t just to document how the day looked, but to preserve how it felt — so that when my couples revisit their photos, they’re transported right back into those moments.
Knowing that the images I create will outlive the day — and potentially even outlive all of us — is both humbling and incredibly motivating. It’s what pushes me to approach every wedding with intention, care, and a deep appreciation for the responsibility of preserving memories that truly last forever.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is knowing that the images I create become part of people’s lives and histories. Photography allows me to document real, meaningful moments — not just on a wedding day, but throughout the different stages of my couples’ lives. From engagements to weddings, to growing families and everything in between, it’s incredibly special to follow along and continue telling their stories over time.
There’s something deeply fulfilling about documenting life as it unfolds. Weddings are often just the beginning, and one of the greatest honors of my work is when couples return years later for maternity sessions, newborn photos, anniversaries, or family milestones. Being trusted to capture those chapters — and seeing relationships grow and evolve — makes this work so much more meaningful than simply creating beautiful images. I have families that I have been photographing since they were engaged, and now they’re on their second and third children! It’s so incredible to be a part of that!
