We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sofia Maggi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sofia Maggi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sofia Maggi, and I am an actress based in Los Angeles. I am also the co-creative director for e-Motion Hybrid Propulsion Systems.
I was born in Los Angeles to an American mother and an Italian father. However, I grew up in Italy on the Ligurian coast in a village called Lerici, near the 5 Terre.
My parents ensured I would embrace both my American and Italian cultures and languages equally. I grew up and studied in both countries and today, I’m grateful for the gift of being completely bilingual.
My father is the third generation of a family deeply rooted in the marine propulsion sector and is currently revolutionizing the industry with electric hybrid propulsion technology—so, being the only child in the fourth generation, my goal of becoming a working actress is quite a departure from our family’s livelihood.
As an only child, films and TV became my refuge, deeply connecting me with a world of stories that shaped my dreams and ignited my imagination.
This led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Film and TV production at the University of Westminster in the UK, where I dove deeper into the mechanics of bringing stories to life on screen.
However, acting is my first passion, and I continued studying the craft whenever I had the chance.
One of my short films, “Volevo Essere Gassman,” completed extensive rounds on the international film festival circuit.
At the time, I was still living in London, and the COVID lockdown was finishing. Upon discovering the film would be screened at the TCL Chinese Theatre in LA, I decided to attend the festival.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles, I didn’t intend to make the city my home.
However, I was soon captivated by the vibrant community of talented and inspiring individuals surrounding me. So, despite the daunting prospect of being far from my loved ones, I decided to stay, follow, and pursue my dream.

Hi Sofia Maggi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents taught me a crucial lesson growing up – stay grounded.
They emphasized the importance of being down-to-earth, humble, and grateful, regardless of the circumstances.
They showed me how to maintain a balanced perspective, not getting too carried away by success or letting failures bring me down. Being grounded means valuing hard work, respecting others, and finding joy in the simple things. Their guidance taught me to live life with humility, strength, and a deep appreciation for all I have.
This lesson guides my outlook and how I interact with others. They also encouraged me to follow my goals, no matter how unattainable. They firmly believe you will succeed if you put in the work and effort. Their unwavering support encourages me to focus on my personal and professional goals.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
To someone who isn’t involved in creative pursuits, artists’ work might appear frivolous, lacking the structure of a traditional 9-5 job and salary.
However, outsiders may not realize the immense dedication, courage, and effort that goes into creating art.
Artists can make their craft seem effortless, masking the countless hours, passion, and hardships invested behind the scenes.
This hidden labor truly defines the beauty of their work. They bring something meaningful and impactful, exposing their most vulnerable part.
It is essential to keep an open mind about where creatives fit into the workplace. For example, my father and I possess diverse skill sets: His mind is scientifically inclined, whereas mine focuses on visual imagery and storytelling.
When he started e-Motion, he understandably prioritized product development. However, the company’s branding was outdated and lacked allure.
Stepping in, I revamped the company’s image, logo and online presence. Despite not having access to film the physical product due to COVID-19 production delays, I had to be inventive.
Through Crowdspring, I worked with over 400 designers to find and develop our ideal logo.
Another challenge we encountered was simplifying the system’s explanation so anyone could understand the benefits of hybrid propulsion. Using stock footage and creativity, I turned to my strongest skill, “telling a story.”
We collaborated with mechanical software engineers and developed 3D clips of the engine components functioning.
I then integrated these clips into educational videos, a website, and multiple press releases that effectively conveyed our mission.
We’re thrilled that our hard work and commitment have paid off and received recognition and praise in the industry. We’re constantly looking for ways to grow and improve our brand.
Creativity bridges art and commerce, creating endless possibilities for growth.
It blurs the lines between artistry and business, leading to unexpected opportunities. Creative endeavors can lead to innovative products, services, and experiences that resonate deeply with audiences.
Embracing creativity helps individuals push boundaries, discover new avenues for growth, and forge a unique path that reflects their vision and values.
Every step taken in pursuit of creativity holds the potential to shape our lives and the world around us in profound ways.
So, embrace your creativity and let it guide you towards limitless possibilities.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to express myself authentically and connect with others on a deeper level through my work.
Creating something from scratch, whether acting or producing, allows me to channel my emotions, experiences, and perspectives into something tangible that resonates with people.
Witnessing the projects’ impact on others, whether it inspires them, evokes emotion, or sparks conversation, is incredibly fulfilling.
However, with acting, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that no matter our story, we are all human.
We walk and experience the same emotions; the most significant difference is how we react.
It’s a profound feeling to know that something I’ve created has the power to touch hearts, provoke thoughts, and ignite imaginations.
