We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Smittty a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Smittty, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I’ve always been told if you want it right, do it yourself. So that’s what I did. I was in high school when the idea came to me. I don’t really know where the name Wezwop came from, I just thought it came off the tongue nicely, made you want to say it 5-10 times. I guess the official start was when I purchased a used embroidery machine and made the first Wezwop tee shirt on a random shirt in my closet, way before the TV Logo. For about 2 years Wezwop was nothing but a white tee in the closet, a ski mask, and two music videos.
Once I came to college and met people with the same mindset as me it was go mode. I made the TV logo that I use today, mock-up designs, ordered the blank shirts, and brought the embroidery machine to the dorms. For my first drop, I made the shirts all in-house, borrowed a cricket machine to make the tags from a girl in the dorms and got everything set up. Made 50 shirts in about a day, and then sold the first drop. I didn’t profit but $20 bucks but I broke even on all the equipment I had to buy. That drop of clothing was when I gave Wezwop its foundation, it wasn’t a huge foundation but it was the true start of a company and not just an idea.
I’ve met a lot of people that struggle to execute their ideas, and the first thing they go to blame is money. I fully understand, I used to do it as well. You have to have at least some money to get a company started, but usually, money isn’t the biggest problem. There are kids making music on a 10 dollar pair of Apple headphones and a phone app. Making 10s of thousands of dollars off of that music. It’s the mindset and execution. My song “On Some”, was shot on an Xbox connect from 2010. Once you understand no one is going to make things happen for you and you are the only person that can change your life then your ideas will very quickly come into place.

Smittty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Smittty and I’m a musical artist and the owner of Wezwop. Wezwop is my multi-media company, and our current focuses are clothing, video, marketing, and music. With everything we do, we try to push the limits and stand out. It’s all about new things and new ideas. Our goal is to give fans and customers an experience they remember every time they see something branded Wezwop.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The best way to grow organically on social media, I’ve found, is just to be consistent and not post low-quality content. I used to ask people where my Instagram story was on their feed, and they would always say I was one of the first ones everytime. I knew that I was doing something right. Running ads of course always helps when you have a plan, but mindlessly droping money on ads 9/10 will leave you disappointed. The best advice I can really give is just try to stand out. The social media game is a game everyone is trying to play. It takes genuine effort to stay relevant on people’s feeds and hit the explore page. Also educate yourself on how to get an advantage. If you have a question about how you should excecute something. Use the internet. This does not apply to just social media it applies to life in general. It actually pisses me off when someone asks a question or says “I don’t know blah blah blah” and didn’t even google it or watch a video. You are fortunate to live in a time where you can go ask a computer a question that would cost you $300+ if you wanted to asked a lawyer that dedicated a minimum 4 years of their life to understand a concept for FREE and get damn near the same response in seconds. USE IT.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I guess just being me. I try to be as humble as possible. At the end of the day, im a regular person. Just cause I might be more creative than the next guy doesn’t mean I’m better than them. I hate interacting with someone and feeling like im below them cause I don’t have the same amount of followers or whatever makes them feel that entitlement. I don’t have a formula or anything. I just be me, and people, for some reason, like what I do so I keep doing it, but if I had to give advice, it would be, just be you, give people content they want, and respect the people that are showing love and supporting what you do.
