We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shirrell Jordan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shirrell below.
Shirrell , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
In my younger years of being a hip hop artist on a mission to be heard I eventually realized that in order for that to happen an artist needs access to media outlets as well as great marketing and promotion. At the time my talent outweighed my budget so I had to come up with clever and catchy ways to be noticed. Once I picked up the camera I decided to start asking the questions I would like to answer to other people that I considered to be dope (interesting) and over time it developed into Baking Soda TV. We have reached over 3.2 million people on Facebook alone since last August with hopes to continue to grow and meet more dope people.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The focus on giving artists exposure on the show comes from my personal experiences as a hiphop Artist trying to be heard, but not only from a music perspective but also as a creative. I understand how important it is to find a platform to display that unique story, concept or sound to the world. If I can be that for someone else it would be fulfilling. I had myself in mind when I began but holding the camera you get to see the beauty in others through the lens and that’s dope to me.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In the absence of certain resources I always tried to improvise with my content on social media. I learned that constantly posting meaningful content grabs the attention of the demographic it is aimed towards. In the beginning it may not be noticed but it’s like you create your own algorithmic footprint by being consistent in spite of. Eventually those planted seeds will blossom. I went from a few hundred followers to nearly 20k almost instantly once my content cracked the surface.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I learned is that as long as your vision provides a clear destination nothing can stop you. I use to think the lack of certain resources and involvement of others would prevent a successful outcome, but this journey has shown me that determination manifests opportunities and relationships as well as knowledge and wisdom that can compensate for the lack of those things I lacked.
