Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sherquan Carter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sherquan, thanks for joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
Scaling my business definitely didn’t happen overnight. It took consistency, a lot of learning, and honestly some mistakes along the way.
I started The Look Boutique as an online boutique in 2020, doing everything on my own—from ordering inventory to packaging and marketing. In the beginning, my focus wasn’t just on selling, it was about building real relationships with my customers, and that’s something that carried me as I grew.
The middle stage is where most of the work happened. I had to learn what my customers actually liked, not just what looked good to me. I made mistakes with inventory, but those moments taught me to be more intentional and pay attention to what was really working.
At the same time, I was working full-time, so balancing both required discipline. I reinvested back into the business and stayed focused on growing step by step.
A major turning point was partnering with the Opulent Lady Business Association, which expanded my network and gave me the confidence to think bigger. From there, I opened my storefront in June 2024.
But for me, this was always deeper than business. I struggled with self-esteem for years, so being able to help women feel better about themselves—whether through what they wear, an encouraging word, or even just a hug—means everything to me. I want women to truly love what they see when they look in the mirror.
At the end of the day, my message is simple: when you look good, you feel good. And if I can be a part of that for someone else, then I’m doing what I’m called to do.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I built The Look Boutique with one goal in mind—to help women feel confident, seen, and good about themselves.
My name is Sherquan, and I’m the owner of The Look Boutique. I started my boutique in 2020 as an online store, and in June 2024, I opened my first brick-and-mortar location. What started as a small idea has grown into something much bigger than I imagined.
My background isn’t in fashion—I work full-time in construction accounting—but I’ve always had a passion for style and helping people feel their best. That’s what pushed me to start my business.
I offer trendy, affordable clothing and accessories, but what I really provide goes beyond that. I focus on creating an experience where women feel supported and confident. A lot of times, people come in needing more than just an outfit—and I take pride in being able to give that, whether it’s through styling, encouragement, or just a genuine conversation.
What sets me apart is the relationship I build with my customers. I’m not just focused on selling—I care about how people feel when they leave. Seeing someone walk out more confident than when they came in means everything to me.
This is personal for me because I’ve struggled with self-esteem for years. That’s a big part of my “why.” I love being able to help women get to a place where they truly love what they see when they look in the mirror. Sometimes that comes from the outfit, and sometimes it comes from an encouraging word or even a hug—but it all matters.
One of the things I’m most proud of is growing my boutique from online to a storefront while working full-time. That took discipline, consistency, and faith. I’m also proud of the community I’ve built through my boutique and my involvement with the Opulent Lady Business Association.
At the end of the day, this is bigger than fashion—it’s about confidence, community, and connection.
When you look good, you feel good.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe what helped me build my reputation is how I treat people. I focus on building real relationships, not just making a sale. I take the time to connect, remember my customers, and make sure they feel comfortable and confident when they shop with me.
One thing that’s really important to me is that everyone receives the same treatment, whether they make a purchase or not. There’s no pressure. I truly believe people will support you when they’re ready. For me, it honestly makes my day just knowing I made someone feel special, regardless of whether they bought something.
Consistency has also played a big role. Whether it’s online or in-store, I’ve always tried to show up the same way—professional, welcoming, and genuine. People know what to expect from The Look Boutique, and that builds trust.
I’ve also been intentional about creating a positive experience. I want every woman who comes in to feel seen and supported, and that word-of-mouth—how people feel after they leave—has really helped grow my reputation.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me has been building relationships and letting that turn into referrals. A lot of my growth has come from word-of-mouth—happy customers telling other people about their experience.
I also stayed consistent with showing up, especially on social media, and making sure people could see my brand, my personality, and what I offer. That helped build familiarity and trust over time.
Another key was reinvesting in my business and creating a better experience as I grew—from online to opening my storefront. That gave my customers a place to connect with the brand in person, which helped bring in new clients while keeping my existing ones engaged.
For me, it all comes back to connection. When people feel good about their experience, they come back—and they bring others with them.
