We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sheri Ryan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sheri below.
Sheri, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My partner and I love the ocean. When we started the business we were making succulent arrangements and noticed that many succulents looked like they could be plants and animals from under the sea. Most of our arrangements included something from the ocean like shells, rocks, mermaids or dolphins . I think this influenced the name . Also partner has a beard and looks like a King Neptune
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Our little business started out with a gift. One of my friends gave me some succulents cuttings. My partner and I became enamoured with them and how much fun they were to work with. We started learning how to propigate and grow them. We reserched all about the names and best ways to take care of them. We started making and enjoying small arrangements. One day I realized we had quite a few of these small arrangements lined up on a shelf. I said,”well maybe we should go to a farmers market and try to sell these.” We started looking into what it would take to do Farmers Markets. We mostly just took the next steps and learned the things we would need to do . The Vendors and market managers were and still are the really the most helpful people We learned so much from them. Over the past five years we have learned to make our signature wine bottles and also offer people a variety of plants to grow their own gardens. I think what sets us apart from others is our genuine love for the plants and our willingness to share this with people.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is my husband we met 34 years ago when we were teachers at the same school. As we entered retirement we happened upon gardening succulents and decided to make a business out of them.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We have many return customers that come to the markets. I am called the plant lady by other vendors and customers. I think it helps to have good looking plants and arrangements. Mostly I think people come back because they love succulents as much as we do. We kind of get to bond over that.
