Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shelby Sylvester. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shelby, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
The defining moment in my professional career came after being diagnosed with my second brain tumor. At the time, I was working doing esthetics so I’ve always had a love for skincare, but going through that experience really shifted everything for me.
I was in so much pain, physically and emotionally, and scalp massage really became the turning point for me. It wasn’t just relaxing, but it noticeably relieved the pain I was carrying in my head and neck.
After my surgery to get the tumor removed, I felt called to create something more meaningful, which lead me to open my own business, Akros Scalp Spa. I wanted to create a space where others could experience that same sense of restoration and healing.

Shelby, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey into this niche was deeply personal. After my brain tumor diagnosis, I experienced firsthand how powerful scalp therapy can be, not just for the hair, but for your overall wellbeing. That experience had shifted my focus from traditional esthetics to something more specialized and purpose-driven: scalp health.
At Akros, I offer customized scalp and facial treatments. I also incorporate advanced Jetpeel treatments for the skin and scalp, which is a non-invasive technology that enhances product infusion. As I continue to expand, I will be integrating targeted hair loss solutions to support clients experiencing thinning.
What sets me apart is that I don’t view scalp care as a passing trend. I see it as essential for our health. Every treatment I designed is rooted in trichology principles, designed to support the barrier and help with circulation.
I’m so proud that Akros was built from one of the most challenging seasons of my life. Turning personal pain into a space that helps others feel safe and supported, is something I will never take for granted. This business isn’t just what I do, it’s deeply aligned with who I am.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has simply been being my authentic self. I share my story openly, I educate from lived experience, and I really don’t try to fit into industry trends that don’t align with me.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
While education and continually learning are absolutely essential in this field, I’d say the most important skill is really the ability to listen and approach each person’s scalp concerns with compassion. Scalp issues can feel deeply personal and very frustrating for clients, so being present and genuinely wanting to help makes a huge difference.
