Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shelby Measel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shelby, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my career comes from a difficult experience I had early on when working with a previous employer. I was employed as a mental health therapist at a practice where I was given a significant amount of responsibility, but unfortunately, the owner of the practice was unable to treat his employees with care, respect and priority. Over time, I realized that my employer was not prioritizing the accuracy of these essential tasks, which ultimately led to me being personally affected by their negligence.
The experience taught me the importance of double-checking others’ work and the critical nature of documenting every single interaction—not just for legal or financial protection, but to maintain professional integrity. It also made me understand that in any work environment, it is essential to advocate for yourself and maintain clear communication about expectations and accountability. I learned that no matter how much trust you place in others, it’s necessary to assume personal responsibility for the details, especially in a field like mental health, where paperwork and financial compliance are crucial.
In this particular situation, I had to quickly learn how to navigate complex financial and regulatory systems—something I wasn’t originally expected to have to double check as normally you would get paid for the services you were providing on time and regularly. The experience has made me more diligent, cautious, and proactive in my work since then. I now double-check all documentation, ensure that I keep records of every client / colleague interaction, and make it a priority to ask questions and clarify uncertainties.
While the process of learning these lessons was incredibly stressful, it’s one of the reasons I now approach all aspects of my professional life with a higher degree of diligence and accountability. It reinforced my understanding of how integral clear systems and communication are, not only for professional success but also for personal well-being and security.
I carry these lessons with me every day, knowing that they make me a more effective therapist and a more responsible professional overall.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the mental health field and diagnostic evaluation because my passion for helping others started early on. In high school, I had the opportunity to work with the Special Olympics team through the special education program, and that experience had a profound impact on me. It opened my eyes to the importance of creating inclusive spaces where individuals can feel understood, supported, and empowered. From that moment, I knew I wanted to pursue a career where I could make a difference in the lives of others regardless of the obstacles.
Today, I’m a mental health therapist and diagnostic evaluator, specializing in a range of conditions, from anxiety and depression to ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. My work is about more than just providing therapy or assessments; it’s about creating safe, welcoming spaces where people of all ages—especially children and families—can better understand themselves and build the skills to navigate life’s challenges. I conduct thorough diagnostic evaluations and offer therapy tailored to the needs of each individual, with a focus on helping them achieve emotional well-being, resilience, and personal growth.
What sets me apart is my deep commitment to the people I work with. I truly believe in meeting each client where they are and providing compassionate, personalized care. My goal is to make sure every person who walks through my door feels heard, valued, and supported. I’m especially proud of how far I’ve come in my career, from my early days with the Special Olympics to becoming a professional who works tirelessly to support those who need it most.
What I’m most proud of is the lasting impact I’ve been able to make in the lives of my clients, helping them to feel confident in themselves and more capable of managing their challenges. I’m driven by the belief that everyone deserves a safe space to grow and heal, and I’m honored to provide that for those who seek my help.
For potential clients or families seeking support, I want you to know that my approach is rooted in compassion, dedication, and a deep respect for your unique journey. Whether you’re looking for a diagnostic evaluation or ongoing therapy, I’m here to help guide you through the process and provide the tools needed to thrive. My priority is always to create a space where you feel comfortable, empowered, and supported every step of the way.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
For me, the answer is yes—without a doubt. Holding space for my clients, whether in therapy or during diagnostic evaluations, is a truly unique and beautiful experience. Every session brings something different, a new challenge, a new insight, a new breakthrough. It’s never the same twice, and that keeps my work dynamic and deeply rewarding.
The joy I find in this profession comes from the opportunity to connect with people in such meaningful ways, to witness their growth, and to be part of their journey toward healing. I’m constantly learning, adapting, and evolving—whether it’s learning from my clients, gaining new skills, or deepening my understanding of the complexities of mental health and development. This keeps me engaged, energized, and always striving to be the best I can be for those I serve.
Being a mental health professional isn’t just a job for me—it’s a passion, and it’s one I’m incredibly grateful for.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe the most helpful thing in my field is continuously learning more about myself through each experience with my clients. Every session offers an opportunity for personal reflection and growth. As I support my clients through their challenges, I’m often challenged to question my own thoughts, beliefs, and assumptions. This process not only helps me grow as a professional but also deepens my empathy and understanding, which ultimately enhances the support I can provide.
At the same time, I’m constantly nurturing my personal curiosity—whether it’s exploring new therapeutic techniques, reading up on the latest research, or reflecting on the dynamics of each session. This intellectual curiosity drives me to expand my knowledge and keep evolving in my approach.
Finding balance is key for me. Balancing my personal growth with my professional development ensures I stay grounded and continue to offer the best care for my clients. It’s an ongoing journey of self-awareness and exploration that keeps me engaged, challenged, and motivated in my work.
