We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shawn Hanna a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shawn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I love this question actually because most people I meet would typically compliment my work; describing it as risky and edgy.
Risk-taking is not merely about impulsivity or recklessness; it’s about having the courage to step outside of your comfort zone and pursue opportunities that have the potential for both failure and reward. I encourage everyone to take a risk.
I took a risk when I decided to pursue a career change, leaving behind my stable job as a Photojournalist at a leading newspaper to follow my true passion. I actually really enjoyed this job. It was within my field of work however just another style of photography that I got to learn. I wasn’t just shooting photos but also journaling; and expressing mini-stories with each photo and words. It was undoubtedly a daunting risk when I decided to quit however there is so much more I see for my myself and my art and I needed that to be showcased to the world. I worked consistently, day and night, mastering my craft and expanding my portfolio. At that point taking a risk was not just a choice but a necessity for growth and to unlock a new version of myself.
Taking that leap of faith ultimately led me to discover my true calling and finding fulfillment in my work. Whether it’s starting a business, traveling to unfamiliar places or like myself, pursuing a creative endeavor, taking risk expands our horizons and pushes us to reach our full potential. So, dare to take that leap and embrace the uncertainty. Do not allow fear to win and go see what awaits you on the other side.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Photographer and Creative Director, Shawn Hanna. I am currently based in Los Angeles and specialize in fashion and editorial-style photography. My portfolio encompasses a range of images that is typically described as risky and edgy. I was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas and shaped a lot of my inspiration from many experiences on the island.
I discovered a deep love for photography when I watched my first season of America’s Next Top Model. I was absolutely obsessed with this show and would always be so eager to see the photoshoots and their end results. It was then when I knew for certain that I wanted to be a Professional Photographer. I picked up my first camera in 2012; a gift from my mom and dad. I can remember that day like it was yesterday! I was so excited. I started photographing family and friends; sneaking my camera to school with concepts I’d create as if it was ANTM. It was all good practice though! I eventually became more established once I completed school and started my company. I’ve since experienced so many new things and have evolved so much as an artist. I take my craft very seriously and will continue to push the envelope each opportunity I get.
I provide a variety of creative services including photography, creative direction, cinematography and direction. Being creative is key for me always and it’s what sets the bar for my clients. A lot of photographers just pick up a camera but it’s the passion and love behind it that really makes a huge difference. I am so proud of my growth! To be just an island boy, who’s now international, is a blessing and there’s no way I would take it for granted. There will be days of failure and hardships but with having good faith and an unwillingness to succeed; you will go very far in this life. I am happy that through my work and success, I can give others hope.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can show support for artists by recognizing the value of their work as both an art form and a profession. This includes acknowledging our art as a legitimate form of expression and appreciating the skill, creativity, and dedication that goes into it. Networking and collaboration is also vital. There should be more opportunities for creatives to connect and collab with each other. Constructive feedback from peers, mentors and critics is also important. This helps artists refine their skills, improve their work and push creative boundaries. Lastly, exposure! I believe through exhibitions, publications, and social platforms, society can show more support to artists by promoting and engaging with their work.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
From a photographer and director’s point of view, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to capture moments, emotions, and tell stories through imagery. Photography allows me to translate my unique taste and perspective into visual narratives.
There’s a profound sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing that my photographs have the ability to evoke emotions and spark conversations. That’s powerful!
Moreover, being a photographer affords me the opportunity to travel the world, network and to constantly evolve creatively. I’ve learnt so much from all of my experiences within the field. Every new project challenges me daily.
Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect is the ability to connect with so many people from all walks of life and leaving a lasting impression through my art. Whether its bringing joy, change, or simply curiosity, knowing that my photographs have the power to make a difference is what drives me to continue pursuing my passion as an artist.
