We were lucky to catch up with Sharon Shofner-Meyer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sharon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea behind DorothyAI came from my experience with the challenges of launching new products, which can be both costly and time consuming. I realized that the best way to maximize the value of these products, especially in a global market, is through effective patenting.
Through years of market research, I identified a common issue – business and legal leaders have access to vast amounts of data but often lack the tools to fully leverage it. That’s where DorothyAI comes in. We’ve honed in on intellectual property analytics, providing objective data that empowers our customers to align their IP strategy and business strategy.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those unfamiliar with my work, I’m Sharon Shofner-Meyer, President and Chairman of DorothyAI, an AI-driven intellectual property solutions management company. My career has spanned from co-founding an online jury research company to holding executive leadership roles at prominent legal tech firms. One of my proudest achievements is launching products that have grown into a $400M product line. At DorothyAI, my focus is on developing advanced AI technology in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University to enhance the quality and workflow for IP professionals, driving innovation and excellence in the industry.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A pivotal moment in my journey was transitioning from being a legal practitioner to creating tools that serve the legal and innovation markets. Early in my career, I spent much of my time advising clients and companies on how to protect and leverage their intellectual property, but I began to see gaps in the resources available to them. This realization inspired me to develop solutions to fill those gaps.
It wasn’t an easy pivot, but it was driven by my desire to create tools that could streamline processes, provide deeper insights and ultimately help businesses make smarter decisions. This shift required me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the challenges of product development. It also allowed me to draw on my legal expertise in a new and innovative way. To make this transition, I knew I needed to broaden my skill set, so I earned a master’s degree, took coding classes and worked with mentors who helped me navigate this new path. Looking back, this pivot was essential in shaping DorothyAI and my other successful ventures.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation in the market has been built on my user-focused approach to product development. I don’t just build solutions for technology’s sake; I dive deeply into the workflows of the market segments I serve and continuously test these solutions with practitioners.
By staying connected with end users, I ensure that what I create genuinely addresses their needs. Additionally, I share my knowledge through speaking engagements, training sessions and collaborations with influential organizations like the Patent Information User Group and the IPO Search and Analytics Committee, advocating for best practices in the industry. This user-focused approach has been key to my success.
