We recently connected with Shanell Monique and have shared our conversation below.
Shanell, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
The idea for my childcare business came from my passion for helping children and families. After working with children for many years, I recognized the need for quality, affordable childcare in a safe and nurturing environment. I often thought about opening my own large home childcare program, but like many aspiring entrepreneurs, fear and uncertainty kept me in the idea phase.
The moment that helped me move beyond the idea phase and actually launch my business came when I contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized. During that difficult time, I reflected on my life, goals, and purpose. I realized that tomorrow is never promised, and I made a commitment to myself that if I recovered, I would stop allowing fear to hold me back. That experience became the catalyst for my new journey.
Once I made that decision, I began researching state licensing requirements, completing training, preparing my home, purchasing equipment, and developing policies and procedures. There were challenges along the way, including finances, inspections, paperwork, and building enrollment, but I remained focused on my vision.
When Monique’s Little Friends Child Care officially opened, it represented more than a business—it represented courage, faith, and perseverance. What started as an idea became a reality because I chose to take action. My journey taught me that success doesn’t begin when conditions are perfect; it begins when you decide to move forward despite your fears.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am the owner and director of Monique’s Little Friends Child Care, a NAFCC-accredited large family childcare home in Oklahoma City. I am also a college student pursuing my second degree in Child Development and Family Science, an author, and the founder of the nonprofit organization Every Child Is a Story Yet to Be Told.
My journey into childcare began with a passion for helping children learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and nurturing environment. After spending years working with children and families, I recognized the need for quality childcare that provides both education and individualized attention. That realization inspired me to create a program where children could feel valued, supported, and prepared for future success.
What sets my program apart is the personal connection we build with each child and family. As a large family childcare provider, I am able to offer a warm, home-like environment while maintaining high standards of care, learning, and safety. I believe children learn best when they feel loved, respected, and encouraged to explore their unique abilities.
In addition to childcare, I am passionate about giving back to my community. Through my nonprofit organization, I work to provide resources and support to children and families in need. Whether through childcare, community outreach, or my writing, my mission is to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
What I am most proud of is turning my vision into reality. After being hospitalized with COVID-19, I realized life is too short to allow fear to stand in the way of purpose. That experience motivated me to stop postponing my dream and launch my childcare business. Today, I continue to grow both personally and professionally while serving children, supporting families, and building a legacy of care, education, and community service.
The most important thing I want people to know about my brand is that it is built on faith, resilience, compassion, and a genuine commitment to helping children and families succeed. Every child has a story yet to be told, and I am honored to be part of their journey.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story that illustrates my resilience is my decision to pursue my dream of owning a childcare business after being hospitalized with COVID-19. Before that experience, I had spent years thinking about opening my own large family childcare home, but fear and uncertainty kept me from taking the leap.
While I was in the hospital, I had a lot of time to reflect on my life and purpose. I realized that tomorrow is never promised, and if I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and families, I needed to stop waiting for the “perfect” time. When I recovered, I made a commitment to myself to move forward despite my fears.
Starting a business was not easy. There were licensing requirements, training, inspections, financial challenges, and the uncertainty that comes with entrepreneurship. At the same time, I was balancing school, family responsibilities, and my desire to serve my community. There were moments when I questioned myself, but I refused to quit.
Today, Monique’s Little Friends Child Care is a reality, and that journey reminds me that resilience is not about avoiding challenges—it’s about continuing to move forward even when obstacles appear. Every challenge I have faced has strengthened my faith, determination, and commitment to serving children and families.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation has been built through consistency, trust, and genuine care for the families I serve. In childcare, parents are trusting you with their most precious gift—their children. Because of that, I have always made it a priority to create a safe, nurturing, and educational environment where children can thrive.
I also believe in continuous learning and professional growth. I have earned childcare credentials, pursued higher education in Child Development and Family Science, and achieved NAFCC accreditation for my program. These accomplishments demonstrate my commitment to providing high-quality care and maintaining professional standards.
Another factor has been building strong relationships with families. I communicate openly, listen to parents’ concerns, and work as a partner in their child’s development. Families know that I genuinely care about their children and want the best for them.
Most importantly, I strive to serve with integrity. Whether through my childcare program, nonprofit work, or community involvement, I focus on helping others and making a positive impact. Over time, people remember how you make them feel, and I believe that dedication, compassion, and authenticity have helped build my reputation within the community.
