We recently connected with Shaneisha Dodson and have shared our conversation below.
Shaneisha , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I enjoy projects that will leave the audience feeling inspired. One of my favorite events is my Love Letters to the Black Man. It’s a safe space for black males to discuss every day issues from mental health to relationships.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I founded my company Black Girlz Productions in 2012. I wanted to see my words come to life so I wrote my first play and began touring. My goal was to bring awareness to social issues through theater. Each of my plays are different, and they all have a powerful message that will help us to be better people. I am proud of my catalog of plays. My company is small, but we produce high quality events.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can share flyers and social media post. That’s free. That one share could be life changing for an artist because you never know who will see the post. With social media, it makes it easier for us to connect with people all over the world.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Earlier in my journey, I wish I would have taken advantage of applying for grants. It’s is so much free money out there for the creative arts community. Grants are competitive, but winning one may be the push you need to take your business to the next level.
