We were lucky to catch up with Shalisa West recently and have shared our conversation below.

Shalisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

The most meaningful project I’ve done to date is the Nike Jordan campaign released early April 2022. It’s meaningful because 5 years ago i did an impromptu Nike shoot, and told myself i would be in a huge campaign modeling for the brand. Five years later my manifestation came true just a week before my birthday.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Ms. West has been a freelance model for roughly 6years now and has made numerous milestones on her own. She has recently decided to move in the direction of being behind the lens instead of the front; while also building a foundation where she can put her artwork on display at different art exhibitions. As you can imagine working two jobs is tough – but through passion, faith, patience, and dedication Ms. West makes it a point to keep striving to become known internationally.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

The goal is to be an example for other young Queer African Americans who want to model, who wants to see themselves on television or billboards. To show that it’s ok to be your authentic self and still pursue your goals and aspirations.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

My most rewarding aspect of this is that i freelance, which means i pick and choose what i want to collab on or not. I like that i have my creative freedom and im still staying true to myself through this journey.
