Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Serin Jordan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Serin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I always wanted to do animation, but was very limited on tools, at first, I would animate using Microsoft power point to make a digital flip book with their nice Transitional page flip tools. This tool was the only thing at the time for me that was close to me animating. The skills that was most essential and I think was most important was learning the basics, at first animating on PowerPoint seemed impossible but learning the tools that PowerPoint had to offer help me to further understand the basic rules for animating. To better speed up my learning process, I could have invested in a dedicated animation program earlier, which would have given me a better foundation and more flexibility. As for obstacles that got in my way of learning more about my craft, was mostly time, dated tools and also a bit of life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up, I discovered my love for animation through cartoons. Watching animated worlds bend reality and accomplish the impossible sparked my curiosity and imagination. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to become an animator to develop the skills to create stories that make audiences pause and wonder how and question what they’re seeing is even possible. One of the creative projects I am most proud of is the indie animated film Trash Cat, which I worked on during my final quarter at Savannah College of Art and Design. On this project, I not only contributed creatively by offering different visual and storytelling perspectives, but I also took on the role of producer. Being involved in both the artistic and organizational sides of the film strengthened my leadership and collaboration skills. Seeing a room full of people watch the finished project and applaud at the end was an unforgettable moment it affirmed my confidence as a creator and reminded me why I chose this path. What sets me apart is my willingness to think beyond conventional methods. I enjoy experimenting with nonlinear tools and approaching scenes from unexpected angles. Rather than simply animating a sequence as planned, I look for ways to add a distinct flair something that makes the work uniquely mine. I believe animation should not only tell a story but also carry the signature of the artist behind it. I am most proud of myself, coming from Jacksonville Florida and not having updated tools but still I learned to adapt, innovate, and make the most of what I had. That journey has not only shaped me as an artist but has also brought immense pride and joy to both me and my mother. To anyone reading this: don’t be afraid to think differently. Growth often comes from stepping outside the expected path. It never hurts to be unordinary to challenge the norm and create something uniquely your own!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe society should bring back after school arts and crafts programs. There may be many young people who have never had the opportunity to explore creative activities that allow them to express their emotions and ideas. Creative spaces give youth a chance to discover new interests, build confidence, and experience the wonder that comes from making something of their own. Investing in the arts for young people is important because creativity helps them see the world differently and imagine new possibilities. By giving them access to artistic opportunities, we encourage innovation, self-expression, and personal growth. Providing these outlets could inspire the next generation to think creatively and ultimately change the world in their own way
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My personal goal, and the journey I continue to pursue, is to help change the world for the better through animation. There is still a common stigma that cartoons are only meant for children, but animation has the power to speak to audiences of all ages. When used thoughtfully, animation can communicate meaningful ideas and messages to people who may need to hear them the most. Animation is more than entertainment it is a powerful storytelling medium that can inspire, comfort, and connect with people on a deeper emotional level. It has the unique ability to transform complex ideas into visual experiences that are both engaging and memorable. With animation it can bridge the impossible with the possible.
