We recently connected with Serafina Yu and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Serafina, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
A few disruptive trends I’ve noticed in the UX/product design world revolve around AI and agents. A prime example of this is the rise of voice UI systems. Beyond the technology itself, we’re seeing a surge of AI products exploring ecosystems with new form factors or applying large language models across various industries. These brands are increasingly focused on conversation-oriented scenarios that have the potential to significantly enhance people’s lives. I firmly believe that design exists to serve these technologies, supporting the end products in a way that adheres to the principle of “Do No Harm” while genuinely elevating the user experience.
I’ve had the privilege of working on the design of one such AI device, the rabbit r1, which has been making waves in the market for a while. One of the key challenges we faced was designing a voice-first user interface system, one that is triggered through auditory interactions rather than the hierarchical layered-information system we’re accustomed to. In the past, we’ve seen plenty of remarkable portable devices like the General Magic, PDA Palm device, iPod Shuffle, Zune, Playdate, and even the Nothing Phone. These devices redefined what was possible through a kinesthetic approach, yet none served the same purpose as our everyday smartphones.
Now, imagine you need to set a reminder to go to the grocery store at 4 pm. Traditionally, you would open your reminder app, type out the note, set the time and date, and then save it. With a dedicated voice-enabled device like rabbit r1, you can accomplish this with a simple verbal request. VUIs are transforming accessibility, making technology usable for those with disabilities or for anyone in situations where touch is inconvenient. They’re also opening up new interaction paradigms in smart homes, cars, and even healthcare, where voice commands can streamline processes.
However, the adoption of VUIs brings up concerns about inclusivity. Variations in accents, speech impairments, and different languages can lead to inconsistent experiences. As designers, it’s our responsibility to ensure that VUIs are accessible to a diverse user base, avoiding potential biases from all angles.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
About Me:
I’m Serafina Yu, a designer with a deep passion for exploring technologies that benefit the human experience. My journey into the world of UX design began with a fascination for how technology can reshape the way we interact with the world. I’ve always been curious about how products and services can be designed to not only solve problems but also to create meaningful, memorable experiences for people. Starting from there, I build products that are empathetic and scalable.
How I Got into the Industry:
My path into the design industry was shaped by a combination of my parents’ influence and formal education from ArtCenter. I’ve always been interested in how people learn and adapt to new technology. This curiosity led me to pursue a career in design, where I could bridge the gap between constantly-evolving technology and end-user experiences from a wide range of digital products. My work at rabbit inc., where I focus on the generative AI domain, allows me to explore how artificial intelligence can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life. I also founded my own design agency, fina studio™, to help startups achieve their goals with an approach deeply rooted in human-centered design.
What I Provide:
Through my consulting service, Fina Studio, LLC, a California registered company, we offer specialized design solutions aimed at helping businesses grow from zero to one. Whether through our subscription-based or packaged design services, we partner with clients to create products from the ground up and develop go-to-market strategies that help these products stand out. We don’t just design for aesthetics; we design for impact. My team and I work closely with clients to understand their vision and translate it into compelling user experiences that resonate with their target audience.
Problems I Solve:
At fina studio™, we tackle the challenges of creating thoughtful designs that are both innovative and functional. Our goal is to solve problems that directly impact our clients’ success while crafting a brand identity that speaks to the company’s core values. We understand that good design is about more than just visuals—it’s about creating a seamless experience that enhances the user’s interaction with the product.
What Sets Me Apart:
What sets me apart in the design industry is my holistic approach to problem-solving. I don’t just focus on one aspect of design; I consider the entire ecosystem in which a product exists. This means thinking about how a product will be used, how it will grow with the user, and how it can evolve as technology and user needs change. My experience working with emerging technologies, particularly in the AI space, gives me a unique perspective on how to design for the future while keeping the user at the center.
What I Want Potential Clients to Know:
I want potential clients to know that when you work with me and fina studio™, you’re not just getting a design service—you’re getting a partner in growth. We’re dedicated to helping you achieve your goals with a creative perspective that not only meets your needs but exceeds your expectations. We believe in the power of design to transform businesses, and we’re here to help you make that transformation a reality.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. My creative journey is fueled by a profound mission: to fuse technology and humanity through design. I am driven by the belief that design is not merely about aesthetics or functionality; it’s about creating experiences that deeply resonate with people, enhancing their lives in ways they may never have imagined. My mission is to bridge the often vast gap between emerging technologies and the human experience, building products that are empathetic and scalable.
At the heart of my work is the conviction that design has the power to shape the future. Throughout history, we’ve witnessed waves of innovation—some arising from the need to solve specific problems, others from the desire to anticipate needs, evoke emotions, and create connections that transcend the digital realm. I embrace both approaches, depending on the scenario, audience, and scope, because I believe that each has the potential to make a significant impact, provided the intention and purpose are clear. Ultimately, I want my designs to inspire, empower, and contribute to a world where technology serves as a catalyst for human potential, fostering a more intuitive, connected, and meaningful existence for all.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a designer is the ability to bring ideas to life in a way that culminates in joy and happiness for others. It’s incredibly fulfilling to take abstract concepts, emotions, or needs and transform them into tangible experiences that can positively impact someone’s life, whether by simplifying a complex process, sparking joy, or creating a moment of connection. The creative process allows me to explore the intersection of technology and human experience, pushing boundaries while staying true to the principles of empathy and accessibility.
What I find most gratifying is witnessing how my work influences and inspires others—seeing a product or design I’ve worked on become a meaningful part of someone’s daily life. Knowing that something I’ve created has the power to evoke emotions, solve problems, or make life a little easier for someone is what keeps me passionate about what I do. It’s that connection between creativity and real-world impact that makes the journey so rewarding.
