We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Odiavbara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
After the idea for Craftmerce came to life, I dove into research. I knew the potential of African artisans but needed to understand how to bridge them with global buyers through technology. The next step was assembling a team of like-minded individuals passionate about creating a fair-trade marketplace.
We spent countless hours analyzing existing platforms, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and brainstorming how Craftmerce could fill the gaps. Then came the technical side—building a user-friendly platform, integrating payment solutions, and solving logistical issues, such as shipping and delivery.
Once we figured out the core framework, I focused on developing the tech infrastructure, from selecting the right tools for scalability to ensuring secure transactions and user privacy. Partnering with artisans was the next challenge; we traveled, built trust, and explained the platform’s benefits. It was a year filled with late nights, trial and error, and endless problem-solving, but finally, we launched Craftmerce, and seeing it come to life was worth every moment.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Certainly! I’m Sarah Odiavbara , the CTO of Craftmerce, a digital marketplace dedicated to connecting African artisans with a global audience. My journey into this field began with a deep-rooted fascination for cultural craftsmanship and a passion for leveraging technology to create positive social impact.
Craftmerce started as a vision to empower African artisans by providing them with a platform to showcase their unique, handmade products to an international market. We specialize in offering a diverse range of authentic crafts, from intricate beadwork and textiles to handcrafted jewelry and home décor.
Our platform solves several critical issues: it gives artisans access to a broader customer base, ensures fair trade practices, and provides a reliable way to manage transactions and logistics. What sets us apart is our commitment to preserving cultural heritage while fostering economic growth through technology.
I’m most proud of the tangible impact we’ve made—improving the livelihoods of artisans and sharing their beautiful work with the world. For potential clients and supporters, Craftmerce represents more than a marketplace; it’s a movement towards sustainable, ethical, and impactful trade. Our platform not only celebrates creativity but also builds meaningful connections between creators and consumers across the globe.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Certainly! One memorable story that highlights our resilience involved a major setback during our early days. We were on the verge of launching Craftmerce, but a key software integration failed just days before our scheduled go-live. This integration was crucial for handling payments and ensuring a smooth user experience.
Faced with the possibility of missing our launch date, the team and I worked around the clock. We quickly assessed alternative solutions and reached out to experts for advice. We re-engineered the integration and tested it rigorously, often into the early hours of the morning.
Despite the intense pressure and exhaustion, our team’s determination and adaptability paid off. We successfully launched Craftmerce on time, and the platform operated seamlessly. This experience not only tested our resilience but also reinforced the importance of flexibility and problem-solving in our journey. It’s a reminder that challenges can often be overcome with perseverance and teamwork, turning obstacles into opportunities for growth.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Securing initial funding for Craftmerce was a pivotal moment in our journey. The process began with meticulous preparation: I spent months developing a detailed business plan, financial projections, and a compelling pitch deck that highlighted our vision, market potential, and social impact.
Armed with these materials, we began reaching out to venture capitalists who shared our passion for sustainable and ethical business models. I attended numerous networking events and pitched to several VCs, each time refining our approach based on feedback.
One particular meeting stands out: I presented to a VC firm known for investing in socially responsible ventures. We were met with skepticism about the viability of a marketplace focused on African artisans. However, I emphasized the unique value proposition of connecting these artisans with global buyers, backed by data and a strong market need.
After a rigorous due diligence process and several rounds of discussions, the VC firm decided to invest. Their support not only provided the initial capital we needed but also validated our concept and opened doors to additional resources and networks.
Securing this funding was a challenging but rewarding process, underscoring the importance of persistence, clarity of vision, and the ability to adapt and respond to feedback. It was the financial and strategic boost we needed to bring Craftmerce to life and start making a meaningful impact.
