We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Fatemi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since I could walk and talk! I knew I wasn’t built for a 9-5 and boy do I love attention! I’ve always loved making people laugh.

Sarah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into standup by accident. I really wanted to be an actress and a writer. My classmate in graduate school was doing a show and it was the first time I’d ever see a woman of color do standup. That same classmate was hosting an open mic and I tried it out and the manager asked for me to come back.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’ve always wanted to see more Middle Eastern women in the entertainment industry. And not in stereotypical roles. I want to show that we can be funny, crass, whatever. The diversity movement has slowly been opening up to Middle Eastern creators. My people’s voice is finally starting to be heard.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I think everyone has this anxiety that you have to “make it” by a certain age. In reality, it’s about the journey, not the destination. As long as you’re enjoying it!
