Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sara Gellert. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sara, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a kid I was drawn to arts, I would always put on shows for my family, whether that was singing or dancing or doing quiz shows in the living room. I was quite shy, so I started taking acting classes, which helped me a lot in finding my confidence and passion. That is when I started thinking about acting as a possible career avenue and then moving to Los Angeles really catapulted this idea because suddenly I was being exposed to a lot more opportunities than ever before. It took me a while to get here, but I feel truly grateful that I get to do this for a living now.

Sara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an actress originally from Budapest, Hungary. I feel like I have come a long way from where I started in terms of self confidence and persistence. I definitely felt like a little bit of an outsider when I moved to America, because there were a lot of changes that I suddenly had to get accustomed to. Now I look at my European heritage as a perk and I think it differentiates me from others in a good way. One of the things that I love most about acting is the ever-changing environments that I get to experience. In the last few years I have worked on feature films, tv shows, commercials, short films, music videos, ads, and so on. My mission is to portray these stories authentically and showcase amazing, strong, complicated characters that inspire me.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
An acting teacher once told me that it is important to know everything that you are going to think and do in a scene. It was her belief that the more you know everything, the more prepared you are going to be. To some extent I agree, however, I look at acting from a different perspective now. Of course I think preparation is one of the most important things you can do, but it is also crucial to have a good method for that. Being prepared does not equal being in control of everything. Learning how to be flexible with the script is so important, because things could change last minute and you have to be able to adapt. In order to be your authentic self in the scene, you have to let go of the control and be present. Feel the energy of your fellow actors, really listen to what they are saying, notice the environment you are in and see how these things may bring something new out of you.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are so many rewarding aspects of embracing your artistic self. There was a time in my life when I was working at a multinational company and did not believe that I could make a living as an actress, and every day I was yearning towards the life that I am living right now. Maybe that is why I can appreciate it all so much. I love that I get to learn so much from the amazing artists on set, we have the privilege of portraying stories and I get to showcase these amazing women who fight for their truth. That might be the most rewarding aspect of it all. It is just a very exciting, collective experience with lots of long hours but also endless fun.
