We were lucky to catch up with Sara Galiana Sola recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sara , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Actually, I love having a creative job that is out of the ordinary. I like to create music every day and face new projects and challenges that help me grow in my artistic career. I feel very satisfied giving my music to others and it is the most rewarding job to me. Although to be honest, I often wonder what having a more normal job would be like , working for a company and not having to deal with all the problems of being self-employed. Having all that more resolved would give me peace to my mind that I don’t have right now. It would also allow me to have a more stable life, which I often miss. But to tell you the truth, when I think about it deeply, I wouldn’t change the adrenaline I feel when I write music for absolutely anything else in this world.

Sara , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Spanish composer specialized in Film Scoring. I’ve participated in several national and international composition competitions for symphonic band and symphonic orchestra in which she has won several distinctions and awards.
I also scored the soundtracks of short films such as “Nevermore”, under the direction of Borja Pascual. This film was award-winning at several festivals and selected to being screened at the Beverly Hills festival, California. I also scored “Sigue contando” by Beatriz Olcina, which had the privilege of being screened at the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia (Sitges). I collaborated in projects for smartphone apps, videogames and have arranged orchestral pieces by other composers. Specializing in audiovisual music, I received private mentorship from composers such as Alex Conrado and Arnau Bataller. I obtained a Film Scoring certificate at UCLA in June 2019 and worked at the company JoAnn Kane Music Service as a copyst, where I was part of the crew in movies as Star Wars IX, Frozen 2, Trolls 2, Maleficent 2, Doctor Dolittle, Onward among others, and TV series as The Mandalorian, Family Guy, Empire, The Simpsons, etc. As well as in live projects, highlighting the 92nd Oscar Ceremony Awards on February 2020. I also worked for one of the most important multinationals in the gaming and leisure sector in Spain and in Latin America writing some music for their smartphone apps. I have been part of the videogame jury of the Berlanga 2021 Awards, part of the jury of the Composition Biennal Award of Eivissa city 2022 and also part of the jury of the XII National Contest of Film Music Bands «Ciudad de Cullera. Currently, I am working as a composer assistant in two music licensing companies that produce music for TV Shows, documentaries, movies and videogames in New York and Serbia. I am also working as an orchestrator for Oscar Araujo, one of the most popular videogame composers in Spain.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I don’t think they would understand how you put up with so many things to make a living as an artist. It is very difficult to understand how we can give up the comforts of a more stable life. They don’t understand how I don’t start teaching music and settle in one place and so stop going here and there. Even I often think about why I do it. But music makes me feel alive, it makes me feel an inexplicable adrenaline inside me, my creative part needs to come out and manifest itself. It has to capture what is inside me in some way, and it is something that I physically need. It goes beyond how what I do will make others feel, it is about my own satisfaction.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most positive aspect of being a creator for me is that you can create things that don’t exist yet, that you can express everything you feel and your deepest thoughts through your music. Furthermore, being a film composer means meeting a lot of people in the industry, going to events and parties, and it is something that I also value a lot. This has allowed me to meet very interesting people with concerns and tastes very similar to mine. Some of them have become my closest friends.
