Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samuel Hernandez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Samuel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of my most meaningful projects thus far would have to be my debut ep “Black Velvet” which was released back in 2020. I dropped it on September 12th on my birthday and a week before the birth of my son. Its was meaningful for so many different reasons. For one, I was mixing and mastering everything during the third trimester of my wife’s pregnancy so shout out to her for holding it down while I was focused and grinding it out. Secondly, it was going to be my first EP ever and it would be my last ep as the old me. When I say the “Old Me” I mean it as in the old me before my son Julian came into the picture. At the time I didn’t have a clue on what to expect. Fatherhood comes with no classes or online courses you can take. You’re pretty much thrown into the deep side of the ocean expected to swim. So, it was really a different time for me. The project was in the works for most of my wife’s pregnancy and the dead line was the expected date of my son’s birth. I really do believe that my son was listening to me play back the album a number of times in his mommy’s belly because every time I play anything from that album he knows its me and he start saying “Da Da” while bopping his head. Lastly, another reason why this project was so meaningful is because it was the first time I was stepping outside of my comfort zone with the sounds and style of music I was experimenting with. This album was influenced by country music, alternative, rock en Español and rap. It was important to me to be different because I feel that as part of the Latino community, I need to introduce diversity to it. I need to represent those that have not been represent it yet. I can honestly go on many other tangents about why “Black Velvet” was so meaningful to me. From the writing and the art work. Everything was done with a purpose. The simplicity of the cover was meant to look like an old western cover with just the letters “Black Velvet”. The music was designed to be moody and all over the place because its a representation of where my life was at the time. It was a statement to my peers and my fans. A change is coming. Decades from now I hope that I can reflect back to this album as something that influenced that change.
Samuel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a content creator from Los Angeles, CA but my journey in content creation started in Utah. I started off by recording music with my friends and then I started taking a little more serious by doing shows. I then decided to invest in my own equipment and even bought my own camera so that I can shoot my own content. Been an entrepreneur ever since running all my production in house. I love learning new ways to create art so I’m always exploring new ways to express it. I enjoy helping my clients with their content. It challenges me to become better every time I do something. It teaches me a lot as well by them letting me into their world. Its always exciting to see & hear the final product because of all the work you know it took to achieve it. I shoot for all sorts of content. It can be any event or music video to a commercial. As of recently I’ve been getting more into the film game. I’m learning how to write out stories and laying it out on a script so keep an eye out for future projects!
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFT’s is a crazy concept. To own something that is not tangible is really wild to me but if the masses give it value then to the masses we must sell. I don’t have anything against NFT’s but I’m not fully convince on the value it has. I think I’m leaning more towards crypto because even then you can purchase tangible items with crypto. It has a value that is transferrable. Although I know NFT’s essentially have the same thing in a way plus the supposed technology it comes with, I’m not sure its something that will be important to the culture until we enter the age of Virtual Reality which is well on its way. Not till we live in a virtual world will we see the value of NFT’s. In my opinion.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I just love helping people achieve their dreams. I can always tell if someone’s vibe is genuine. So if a client comes to me looking for my creative help to achieve their dreams I indulge in it like if it were my own. Being able to create something so compelling and making sure my client is happy with it is what is most rewarding to me.
