We recently connected with Samantha Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I first picked up a camera at a young age, learning the fundamentals through a combination of guidance from my father and simply experimenting on my own. My passion for photography and film grew from there, leading me to study photography in high school and ultimately pursue a degree in Film Studies at the University of Leeds, UK. During my time at university, I developed a foundational understanding of camera work, editing, sound design, and narrative structure. However, the true depth of my learning came through hands-on experience—whether it was making short films with friends or collaborating with more seasoned filmmakers on set.
After relocating to New York City, I began working as a studio technician in Brooklyn, where I further honed my technical skills, particularly in studio lighting. I also worked as a freelance camera assistant, which provided invaluable insight into the intricacies of lenses, focal lengths, gimbal operation, and other essential tools of the trade.
After four years in New York, I moved to Atlanta, where I made the decision to start my own business and work as a freelance filmmaker. It was during this period that I learned the most, as I found myself juggling every aspect of the filmmaking process—from shooting and editing to lighting, planning, and budgeting. This experience was both challenging and rewarding, as it forced me to become a more versatile and self-sufficient filmmaker.
Looking back, I’ve realized that the most effective way to learn filmmaking is to simply dive in—pick up a camera, edit footage, and plan a shoot. If I had wanted to accelerate my learning, I could have created more work earlier on and expanded my network within the industry. Rather than waiting for opportunities to present themselves, I should have been more proactive in creating them for myself.
Filmmaking is a highly technical field, so there are many essential skills to master. I believe that focusing on a particular area of interest and becoming highly proficient in it is the best approach. For me, the most important skills have been camera operation, lighting, editing, and color grading.
Ultimately, the only real obstacles to learning more have been time and motivation. In today’s world, most aspects of filmmaking can be learned through resources like YouTube or books, so there’s little standing in the way for anyone determined to pursue it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sam Jones, and I’m originally from Bedfordshire, UK. My journey in the film industry began in earnest when I moved to New York City in 2018. It was there that I truly immersed myself in professional filmmaking, gaining hands-on experience and building the skills that laid the foundation for my career. In 2022, I relocated to Atlanta and founded my own production company, 3 Paw Productions, where I specialize in a wide range of projects, including music videos, real estate videos, documentaries, and corporate productions.
Film has always been a passion of mine. I studied it at university and spent years writing and filming as a hobby. However, it wasn’t until I moved to NYC that I turned that passion into a profession. I progressed from being a studio technician to a camera assistant, then to studio manager, and now to a director and cinematographer. Each step in this journey has deepened my understanding of the craft and honed my creative vision.
At the moment, I’m particularly passionate about creating music videos. I love the collaborative process of working with artists—listening to their music, understanding their visual ideas, and crafting a concept that brings their vision to life while staying within budget. From the initial brainstorming to assembling the crew, shooting the video, and delivering the final product, I handle every aspect of production. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to help artists see their music translated into a compelling visual story.
What sets me apart in this industry is my ability to balance creativity with practicality. I excel at finding innovative ways to stay within budget without compromising on the artistic vision. My distinctive style is evident across all my work, and I strive to ensure every project feels fresh, unique, and true to the client’s vision.
If you have an idea, I can bring it to life. Share your concept with me, and I’ll help you expand it into a fully realized production—from a detailed shot list to the final polished product. Let’s collaborate to make something extraordinary.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is the privilege of working in an industry I deeply love. Every day, I’m surrounded by fellow creatives whose passion and talent inspire me to push boundaries and elevate my craft. There’s an unparalleled sense of fulfillment in bringing an idea to life and creating something I’m genuinely proud of. The atmosphere on creative projects is truly special—most people are there because they love what they do, and that shared enthusiasm transforms work into something that feels less like a job and more like a true passion.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The most valuable and consistent source of new clients for me has been referrals and Instagram. Referrals are particularly meaningful because they represent a deep level of trust and satisfaction from past clients. When someone takes the time to recommend my work to a friend, colleague, or partner, it’s not just an endorsement—it’s a testament to the relationships I’ve built and the quality of the work I deliver.
Instagram has also proven to be an incredible tool for attracting new clients and showcasing my portfolio. It’s a platform where I can share not just my finished projects but also behind-the-scenes glimpses into my creative process.
