Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sam Jaboin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sam, appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
More than ten years ago, my cousin introduced me to photography, and helped me buy my first camera, Canon T2i. Back then, it was just a pastime and a form of self-expression. I never envisioned it evolving into a business or a profession.
In 2017/2018, I found myself on the waitlist for NYU’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. During that waiting period, I took the opportunity for self-reflection and realized my interest in the field waning during internships. Although contemplating withdrawing my application, I knew I needed a viable alternative before making a final decision.
While working as a production assistant on NBC’s “Talk Stoop,” surrounded by photographers, videographers, and editors, I delved into the world of camera gear and tips. My supervisor, Eric, who was transitioning from Canon to Sony at the time, offered to sell me his old camera. i saw this as a potential sign that possibly this can be my replacement for physical therapy school, i knew if commit, I HAVE to give photography my full effort. My life took a transformative turn when I purchased Eric’s camera.
In the following week, I watched in YouTube tutorials on mastering my camera and became captivated by the learning process. This marked the inception of what some might call my YouTube addiction lol 😅. Determined to build my portfolio, I followed advice to use friends as models. Making deals with them, I offered free pictures in exchange for their collaboration, and the rest is now history.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As cliche as it may sound, i like to look at photography as my creative outlet. I always been amazed when I see another photographer get such a crazy shot, and see how they did it, basically seeing an idea become a reality. One thing that i try to incorporate teamwork, i never want my client to feel like i’m just telling what to do and pose, I always tell them that i want to include their input, as it’s their vision, my job is to help them get there. and to make sure we’re on the same page, I do require at least a minimum of 2 phone calls prior to our shoot. If i’m shooting in an area that i’m not familiar with, i will go there a day or 2 earlier, just so i can scoop out the place, so that on the day of we can use our time efficiently.
what i’m most proud of at this moment is that i had my photo featured on Martha Stewart’s website for this product photography shoot i did a for a skin care line.
what i would like my potential clients to know about working with Sam J. Photos is that I don’t aim to give you good photos, I honestly aim to exceed your expectations greatly!.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I have two of these. The most rewarding aspect for me is when a returning client chooses to rebook me. It shows that I satisfied you last time we worked together and that you trust me to do it again. Secondly, seeing my client use my photo as their profile picture on social media makes me incredibly happy.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
YES!!!! I doubt that people appreciate how much time I spend on the computer editing their photos. This is especially true for weddings and other lengthy events. Some galleries take me up to 25 hours to complete.
