We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sage & Soul. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sage below.
Sage & Soul, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
We thought it was important to choose two words to represent two different owners. Sage is an all natural cleansing herb, which closely resonates with our hair side as we feel cleansing with natural ingredients is an important part of what we do in the salon. Soul because we feel the relationships that are built through longevity of repeat clients, along with the naturally supportive connection provides community and the camaraderie that resonates with the soul.

Sage & Soul, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sage and soul emerged after the Covid pandemic. The two owners used to work together at a salon space owned by just one of them. After the pandemic we realized that we needed a big change. We embarked on the journey to rebrand and move into a partnership, Creating Sage & Soul Studios as a collaborative independent studio space offering short and long term leasing with amenities included. Sage & Soul supports independent salon pro’s to create a sustainable business for the environment and themselves.

How’d you meet your business partner?
In 2011 one of our owners, Erin made the choice and open a salon space in Worthington. Blending commission and booth rental options, she supported both newly emerging stylists as well as provided independent booth rental space to establish stylists.
Throughout exploring different routes of promoting her new business, she befriended a client and her daughter who is recently just graduated cosmetology school from Aveda Institute. Over several appointments, taking care of mother, daughter, manicures, professional conversation, came up from time to time. Courtney, after graduating from Aveda embarked on a journey, starting her career at JCPenney‘s hair salon after several years of learning her mojo behind the chair she was ready to take a leap of independence and move to a booth rental. She chose the salon space her and her mother frequented for their gel manicures. After years of establishing an independent clientele all things Covid hit in 2020. Erin made tough choices to pivot her business and offer relief and support to her independent Stylist and made the decision to let go of her newly licensed stylist. The time was unsure for so many but we made it through closure and adapted to the new normal. In 2022 we knew it was the right decision to make big changes! Erin & Courtney went to the drawing board to dream of creating a new brand that included all of the things we learned and kept us going over the years. After finding the perfect location in Clintonville, we made the move and established a partnership!

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media takes time and patience and most importantly consistency! Making a choice to show up consistently builds brand awareness and always making it a point to speak in your brand voice to clearly deliver your message and focus on your audience is how you grow. We are excited about each and every new follower we get. We love providing content that every solo salon professional can gain value and community from.
