We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sabella Reyes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sabella below.
Sabella, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I had the privilege of executive producing Christian Hip-Hop Rapper and Songwriter, A-Dub White’s, debut album “Cupid Tape.” The album is the start to his blueprint for millennial, Christian-romance. My contribution to the project initiated after I approached A-Dub White (on Instagram live) requesting his collaboration in a Christian-romance single originally titled “Shoot My Shot.” Our creative processes meshed so well we ended up collaborating on a full album about this topic!
At the time, I had no credentials and no experience as an Executive Producer. Talk about imposture syndrome! By focusing on the artist’s strengths, I was able to empower the artist in a unique way that taught me the healing power of music. This process made me feel so much more comfortable with the idea of monetizing my natural gift.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Of, course! My name is Sabella Reyes, but I go by “Bella.” I was a singer/songwriter at the age of 14, and became a recording artist at the age of 16. However, right after high school I joined the U.S. Navy to flee sexual/emotional abuse.
I was raised by a single mother of five children; I am the oldest. Considering how I was a child with adult problems, my transition into adulthood was quite challenging. I had learned quickly that the consequences of my decision making had the potential to adversely affect my four younger siblings. Because of this, I was limited to only partaking in non- destructive behaviors to cope with my reality. My behaviors of choice were singing and songwriting.
I grew up pretty guarded, so I did not have many friends who could relate to my situation. Fortunately, it didn’t take me long to discover that the people on the radio shared my point of view in many ways.
My love for music started soon after I learned how to speak, so I can say with confidence that my relationship with music is quite intimate. Various artists and executive producers are responsible for my ambition, my values and my passion today. For example, Queen Latifah taught me that I could prosper in my own independence, Jodeci taught me that sex was actually a beautiful thing, Lil’ Kim taught me that I can assert dominance through my sexuality and be taken seriously, and Maxwell was the first man to ever make me feel beautiful. My relationship with music is not only special, but life-saving. I truly believe that I have what it takes to save the lives of others the same way music did for me.
After 11 years of honorable military service, I attended the University of Southern California to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work with a sub concentration in Military Families and Veteran Services. My dream school! I now work as a Licensed Master Social Worker where I get to help people in crisis thrive in everyday activities that may be challenging to them due to a mental health disorder, personality disorder or chronic physical health condition.
I’ve met so many amazing people in my journey; from the wounded warrior, to the homeless person under the bridge, to the person living in a psychiatric facility, to the tired couple who is considering divorce, to the undocumented pregnant woman in need of prenatal care, all the way to the young man who was recently released from jail and needs help preparing for his first job interview. Social work has shown me that I have the natural ability to connect with just about anyone. My dream is to learn how to do this through music as an Executive Producer by use of music medicine.
After nearly 20 years, I have been called back to music! God has made it very clear as to what capacity I will be applying my musical talents, and He has surrounded me with a PHENOMENAL network of people who believe in me just as much as I do in myself. I am now the CEO and Head Manager of Symphoni Music Group, LLC, which is an independent record label and management firm. You should check out my work!
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
The mission driving my personal, creative journey is helping artists effectively illustrate their purpose through their music. The music industry is extremely saturated, which can be pretty discouraging to the everyday, independent artist. I truly believe that every artist serves a purpose as well as a specific population. I am committed to helping independent artists find their purpose and the community they were created to serve.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
This is a tough one! I would say providing a safe, vulnerable space for artists to experiment with their sound(s) is the most rewarding aspect of my creativity. I get an exclusive, front-row seat to the artists’ creative processes as I assist them in emphasizing their strengths and disguising their weaknesses.
During this process, I can help independent artists gain leverage and the attention of major marketing distributors and record labels. This is all a part of my creative process in assisting artists in turning great music into great songs!
