We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ryan Burton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ryan below.
Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
If I had to choose a hero it would have to be my seven year old brother ,Blake, who passed away from stage 4 leukemia cancer 3 years ago. During that time, that was a very tough time on my family and I because that disease came out of nowhere. What made it more rough is that I was in college in Memphis at the time it happened, as that side of my family (my father & stepmother) reside in Chicago. I would have to do facetime calls and texts to be updated on his health every other week. I’ll never forget when my sister gave me the news that he was put on hospice. It felt like a sword just sliced through my heart as soon as I heard it. For that week, I didn’t do anything but stay in my room and think to myself, “God please give me an understanding on why this is happening to an innocent child?” However, I learned resiliency, toughness, and determination even more because of Blake. He fought so hard through the process and always kept a smile on his face no matter what. Through my creative journey, I always think of him when I’m going through times and always say to myself, “Blake pushed through whatever at whenever, so I know I can too”. That whole process of him being diagnosed last for about 3 years or so as he unfortunately passed away in November 2021. It definitely influenced me to go harder and work my tail off to get where I want to be in life for him and my family. God always has a testimony for us in this life and I will make sure I’m always guided through his faith and Blake’s.

Ryan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Blessings to everyone reading this, my name is Ryan Burton and I’m a creative Visionary that specializes in photography, videography, creative directing, fashion, & event hosting. What led me to pursue these activities was me always being the creative type since I was a kid. I always loved to draw, paint, & dress since I was young and I knew since then I wanted to do something creative when I became an adult. I didn’t start taking my creativity serious until about my freshman year of college, where I was blessed to meet my three friends soon turned to be business associates. We have a creative Visionary group named SEY, where we focus on fashion, videography, photography, music, and hosting events. After classes my freshman year, we would always go freelance and shoot photos in downtown Memphis just to practice our craft and hone in on what we knew could be very special if we took it serious. From there, we have worked with all types of creatives and media groups all over Memphis, which I am very blessed to have been apart of. Nonetheless, I would say I am the most proud of how far we have gotten at such a young age as we all are (23 years). Of course, life has hit us along the way but we remain consistent no matter the circumstances and always strive to be better than we were yesterday. I want the audience reading this to know that you can be great in whatever you strive to be no matter what anyone says when you put your mind to it. Lastly, we have some special drops about to release soon so feel free to follow us on Instagram at Sey_industries and on our YouTube at SEY.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
My advice for managing a team to keep a high morale is to always been evenkill about everything. Never put any pressure on yourself when it comes to deadlines, ideas, content drops, etc because that only builds anxiety. The main thing is to plan ahead for everything so you won’t be going against time because we all know how that can be. If you can do these things you will be just fine because anything in life is a process but it’s all about the small things you do within the process that leads to success.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Honestly, I watch a lot of entrepreneural videos on YouTube and I also read quite a few philosophical & psychological books when it comes to the business aspect in life. Adding to that, I took philosophy & psychology classes in college so those helped me build knowledge on the human mind in business and in life. I’ve always been a three dimensional thinker when it comes to situations so I understand a lot more than the average person due to me always stretching my thought process. Anyways, with me watching videos and reading books all the time it definitely has helped me become more patient with myself and others, better time management, & not putting too many expectations into things because most of the time you will let yourself down by doing that. I’ve always been a nerd at wanting to learn new things so I’m definitely grateful God blessed me with the perseverance to want to learn more and use that knowledge to teach others if willing to be taught.
