We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rosina Ng. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rosina below.
Rosina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Brushes and Roses was a brain child of mine for a while. I would tell my close friend’s about the idea, and some were extremely supportive and some were not. In 2019, my grandmother passed away. She meant the world to me, she was the woman who practically raised me as a child. The words she constantly spoke to me then echoed in my head “ 你想做咩都得,你做得開心啲咪得囉” which translates to “You can do whatever you want, just make sure you’re doing it happily” So I took the chance, started off on my own during COVID-19 and slowly grew a team over the years. The beginning was absolutely awful, I knew nothing about owning a business. I had no clue about contracts, invoicing, budget sheets, or taxes. But I figured it out as I went along, I joined Facebook groups that helped small business owners, did a lot of research, asked other business owners lots of questions. After a while I began to realize owning a small business is simply a never ending to do list. Eventually with a few events, and pile of clients I officially launched Brushes and Roses in 2021.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into this industry because I’m a sucker for romance. I love a love story, what can I say? I loved being a part of someone’s special day and hearing about how they met, what made them fall in love, etc. Here at Brushes and Roses we believe in artistry in bridal. We deliver with our best foot forward. I truly believe as a team, we not only bring our clients vision to life but want to ensure our client feels seen and heard. Which is not often in the beauty side of bridal unfortunately. What separates Brushes and Roses from others is I truly believe my clients pick me, but we also pick them. Similar to marriage, I do believe my clients and I have to work and communicate well together to ensure a look that is perfect for my client. Communication is key here at Brushes and Roses, and sometimes over communicating is our way to ensure that.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
You don’t need more time, you need a deadline.
You don’t start anything when the time is right. Everything is about figuring it out along the way. And sometimes, that requires you as the owner asking for help. I used to move thinking I had all the time in the world. When in reality everything needs a deadline. I apply this to business, and my personal life. If deadlines aren’t met, things get extremely messy and a messy business makes a messy life.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Brushes and Roses started off as an Instagram handle and a side hustle. I realized that there was a need for brides and clients who wanted to look like themselves. No extremities. I tapped into that market, I wanted my clients to feel comfortable in their own skin. It’s scaled to where it is today because I believed in my business. I always put her first, above all else. Brushes and Roses grew because I believed in it, and I watered it. I took care of the people who helped me grow it and kept it functioning. And that is what keeps a business up and alive even in the toughest of times.
