We were lucky to catch up with Rose Bellamy-Hicks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rose, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From the moment I picked up a crayon, I knew I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. My mother and father were both creative souls with an eye for style and design, so I suppose it was just encoded into me. Both of my parents vehemently encouraged my artistic endeavors. I can remember a many of art shows and contests I had the opportunity to be a part of as a child, so by the time it was time for me to pick what area I wanted to study in college, Graphic Design was a no-brainer for me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Rose Bellamy-Hicks and the main titles I would use to describe myself are Multi-Media Artist and Deep Ellum Store Manager! I love my role at Everything Ellum because it gives me the opportunity to network with many talented people of different disciplines and backgrounds. Our store is 100% locally owned and made and located in the heart of Dallas, Texas. I have such immense pride working for such a cool and innovative store. I love getting to be involved with emerging artists to help give them a platform to begin marketing their artwork, and also getting to help established artists grow their reach by having a brick and mortar store to house some of their designs. Deep Ellum has such a vibrant community of all types of creatives that everyday here is interesting for sure. Everything Ellum gives me more than just the ability to manage a trendy apparel store, but also allows me to stretch my own creative abilities in many different forms. I get to dip my toes in different outlets of creative expression through fashion and graphic design, so my store gives me the perfect mix of balancing my many loves.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way society can support artists and creatives is by showing up. That’s supporting your artist friends/family members/peers by buying their artwork and sharing it as much as possible. We live in a very social media driven age where its not hard to give a shoutout to your favorite artists. Even if you’re not in a place to be able to purchase their artwork outright, it’s simple enough to post an Instagram story to your profile. That little bit of support goes a long way for any artist.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I suppose at this point in my life I’ve had my hand in so many creative areas. From painting, animation and game design, tattooing, printmaking, poetry and creative writing, jewelry making, and graphic design, I lived a many a different lives as a multi-media artist. At this stage in my career, I want to create things that are cool art pieces but are also functional in everyday life or are recycled/upcycled in some capacity. I want to create things that are sustainable, good for the earth, and to be something more than an item on the wall to look at. That’s why Everything Ellum is such an important store to me personally in my creative journey because it’s bringing local artwork into fashion, where an artist’s work becomes a piece in the mosaic of someone else’s self expression. That was groundbreaking for me.
