We were lucky to catch up with Rosario Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rosario thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Three years ago, when I decided to start writing and illustrating, I felt the need to share, in my own words, stories that could reach the hearts of families but mainly children. Stories that help to understand, to strengthen the processes of change we face as a society. I also needed to connect through language with different cultures, motivating the child to get involved and learn from a new culture. Thanks to my books, I am passionate about being a positive and helpful movement for new generations. Help make gratitude a habit at an early age, convey how fantastic it is to be grateful for what we have and what we will have, and how life can return all the good you do for others but mainly for yourself.
Rosario, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Mexican author and illustrator of bilingual children’s books. My mission is to be one more tool so that parents can discuss issues with their children that are of great importance, especially at early ages. During my experience as a teacher and after the world revolutionized for everyone in 2019, I realized how important it is to work with children on topics such as gratitude, positive thoughts, positive affirmations, goal achievement, self-control, and self-love, among others. In 2019, I embarked on the beautiful journey of books and illustrations. In addition to touching on issues necessary to make them part of our lives, I also want to participate in the inclusion of culture through language. I am interested in awakening children’s interest in learning a second language and how stories can link different cultures.
I love the possibility of helping shape and change lives through my characters. I am fascinated by the idea of being part of the love for books and promoting the culture of reading at an early age. I am interested in being part of the movement and sharing the habit of reading with countries still far from being a priority.
That is why I decided to make a series of books because when children like the concept and the characters, it is easier for them to get hooked on reading, and thus they will be motivated to read and learn more about the stories.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Young readers motivate me to continue my journey as an author and illustrator. When they come to discuss the central theme, when they reflect on the characters, when children feel identified with some of them, or when their perception of simple topics such as gratitude changes after reading one of my stories. I am driven by the new generations, wanting to share with little readers how to be more resilient through the beautiful stories of The Wholks, a world of socks.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The main themes of my stories, such as positive thoughts, self-love, and gratitude, are themes that have been uncovered and emphasized over time. Past generations grew up with a lack of information. They were not frequent topics in families and schools. I would have loved to grow up in a culture of acceptance, inclusion, and self-control routines, among others. Throughout my life, I have been preparing myself to obtain more knowledge and tools to support my project and change patterns that even the same changes could help me transmit to my children and my students.
