We recently connected with Rosaria Bazan-Pepe and have shared our conversation below.
Rosaria , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I was fortunate to attend a great college in New York City to receive my creative degree. Being in a city with so much inspiration enabled me to immerse myself with like-minded individuals and exposed me to an education I was enthused about. As far as learning to do what I do today, that took practice and discipline. I allowed myself to make mistakes and learn from them.
I don’t believe you can speed up the learning process. You can learn a technique and materials in a few days or hours, but it is through practice, along with trial and error, that will give you meaningful results for your final product.
The most essential skills were learning the business aspect of starting an art practice. Knowing how to price your work, write an artist statement, apply for grants, and create a webpage are just a few examples.
The obstacle that stood in the way of learning more for me was time management. Being a primary caretaker, raising a family, and trying to block out time without disruptions to learn new skills was challenging.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I entered the arts because it’s the only energetic discipline that comes naturally to me. I look forward to being in the studio to work on my projects. There have been many moments when I lose track of time and get engrossed in the work I am creating.
The artwork I create is abstract mixed media; it is colorful and uplifting, and it strikes you with a sense of curiosity. You can contemplate whatever you see, feel, or think about the artwork, which is everlasting and keeps on giving. And if you love it because it has your favorite colors, that’s fine too. There is something for everyone; art is for everyone and can be appreciated by all.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can best help artists by being open-minded and understanding the impact they contribute when they support an artist.
Many artists work as small businesses, bringing you creations that are original and unique. When society makes a monetary contribution to the artist, it helps contribute to the artist’s practice, the local community, and culture.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is knowing that what I create will spark curiosity and bring a certain sense of joy into someone’s life. We are born curious, and surrounding yourself with art is to be forever curious!
