We recently connected with Rodolfo Schulz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Rodolfo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I was always the person to play it safe, I knew starting a business would be risky and I spent years in the endless cycle of some safe corporate job that didn’t give much employee appreciation. I had started a sales job and witnessed even top sellers being told they aren’t doing well enough. I witnessed those coworkers get push back for wanting to attend their own daughter’s birthday party and that’s when I realized that work/life balance is such an important factor in each person’s life. That is the culture I want to build as Carbs & Margs grows!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I moved to the United States from Brazil at age nine, the scenery and culture here was shockingly different but made me wonder more about other places around the world. When I finally had the chance to travel, I was lucky to experience new cultures, to indulge in new adventures, to finally feel some much-needed freedom away from the office. All that traveling made me want to do more of it. Problem was getting that work/life balance inside a corporate culture of being discouraged to take time off. That’s when I came up with the idea for Carbs & Margs. We have a mission to remind everyone how important the life/work balance is. That is YOUR time away from the office and should be enjoyed as such. We spend so much of our life working, but what is the point if you don’t take time for you to experience life as you envisioned? That’s exactly why I see Carbs & Margs as something that stands out. It reminds you of the time you earned for yourself (but still treat yourself to some delicious tacos too!). So many of my friends, as well as myself, celebrate taco Tuesday EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK. So why not create a brand with a taco and margarita vibe to remind us of the good things in life?
What I’m most proud about this entire brand and where I am is how much I learned during all this. I learned basic graphic design, putting a website together, finding vendors, studying marketing, brainstorming new designs and many more details that helped build Carbs & Margs to what it is today. It also makes me proud because I had this one little idea that was brought to life and helped me develop new skills.
If there was one thing, I’d want our current/future Carbs & Margs supporters to know is that as we continue to grow, we will keep striving to build a work culture that values work/life balance and employee happiness.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Large companies always had their set ways to do things. So, what drives my creative journey is finally being able use my own creativity and turn them into designs/ideas/ statements that I bring to our supporters. Between a beach feel or a retro vibe, we will keep creating new designs that fit each person’s fashion preferences.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve had to pivot my path in life/career a few times. I first got into the travel industry after working my first job as a baker inside a restaurant. I wanted something that I could grow in. While doing so, I lost my home to a fire. The only thing I had to my name after this fire was the clothes on my back. The night that all this happened, my friends wanted me to get my mind off of things and took me out for tacos. Luckily the community around me was extremely supportive and helped me get back on my feet, however, I needed more. I worked harder than I ever did before for a promotion at work. 5 months later, I was promoted to management. 7 years passed by and I started doubting that career. We were often put in dangerous situations, especially after the pandemic started. With little to no support from upper management, I started looking at other options. Ended up in a sales position where I just sat in some cubicle and that’s where I learned I needed to get out of this cycle of just working for a big corporation and breaking off into something I can actually be myself with.
