Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roderick August. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roderick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
When you’re different in any aspect, people often create a whole story about you in their minds before they’ve even learned anything about you, or listened to you, in my case. That can be really cool because I feel most people get their minds blown then they’re on board and other people legit get mad at you for breaking their grip on reality. It’s fun

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Roderick August, im a recording artist, musician, performer of sorts here in Nashville. You can discover my music at www.roderickaugust.com or follow me on social media for more information. While I don’t view myself as a politically minded artist per say, I’ve always been interested in writing songs that encourage people to look at things form different angles. Im interested in songs that call out corruption and corporate greed. It’s not a left or right issue for me, if I see anyone being taken advantage of or dooped by the powerful, it angers me enough to wanna write about it. But it’s not all doom & gloom.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
fulfillment, satisfaction, freedom. I’m just a healthier, happier, fulfilled person when I’m doing what I do. It’s a beautiful life at the end of the day.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Unfortunately I’ve learned from experience that most people actually believe we artists do this because we want to be famous or something. “One day you’ll make it” or “don’t give up your dream” etc
Think about those statements for a second… people say this after you have a great show, those people don’t know how much you make, those people don’t know how you live and they certainly don’t know the fulfillment you receive when you’re making a living with your God given talent. It’s all so silly to me, it’s like nothing is ever enough for some people. In music, their only understanding of “success” = fame. I’ve spent a lot of time pondering over this lol
