We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robyn . a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
At the start of the summer, I had told myself that I would complete my first painting series. I wanted to do something similar to Goya’s ten black paintings. Goya created the group of paintings on the wallpapers of his isolated villa, 14 oil paintings all over his home. 14 paintings by the end of the summer seem like it would be easy enough and I immediately created this newer piece called “At My Bedside” which is a portrait of a ghostly white figure in a glossy black abyss. Since I had considered this piece a small success I thought that I’d keep going with this visual aesthetic and attempted two more paintings. One is of a knight in large menacing black steel armor and the other is of a young boy in his mother’s arms, presumably after he has fallen in battle. Both came out as complete failures, I couldn’t quite connect with them the same way I had with the first piece I made. I guess it was because there was nothing there other than a pretty image it wasn’t connected to me at all, I made it but i wasn’t in it
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I make mixed media work typically using acrylic paint and magazine prints. Reinterpreting existing imagery I really wish there was more I could say but I’m quite boring haha I make things that look cool to me/represent who I am at that time. Hopefully, other viewers can put a more important meaning onto them.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Creating a large collection of work. Get gallery representation.
Solo show.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I really like Yukio Mishima the Japanese author, superstar, bodybuilder, samurai, and a full-time weirdo. Also, Lorna Simpson whose a really wonderful black artist her words guided me when I couldn’t think.
