We were lucky to catch up with Robert X. Golphin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Robert X. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
You know, over the course of my career, I’ve discovered that the most meaningful projects are the ones that involve up-and-coming creatives. It’s been a journey from my early days as a teenage filmmaker to where I am now, and there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction I get from inspiring people of all ages, especially young folks, to dive into the unpredictable world of entertainment. I’ve always said that this industry isn’t for the faint of heart, and I take pride in sharing my wisdom, experience, and creativity with those just starting out.
What’s really cool about these collaborations is that they’re a two-way street. While I aim to pass on my knowledge and passion, I also get to learn so much from these emerging talents, which keeps my own creative spark alive.
In an industry as packed with talent and competition as ours, waiting for opportunities can be downright agonizing. It can make you question everything, all the time. But I’ve never let rejection get in my way, and I’ve made it a mission to instill this kind of resilience in others.
I firmly believe that rejections are just stepping stones, not dead ends. My unwavering determination isn’t just a personal trait; it’s a beacon of hope for many others who are navigating the same challenges.
While I’ve been fortunate to be part of various mainstream, indie, and underground projects, my own creations hold a special place in my heart. These projects demand every ounce of effort, symbolizing my unwavering commitment to bringing my creative vision to life. Achieving that vision is the ultimate reward for me, and it’s why I do what I do.
But above all, the most meaningful projects I’ve been a part of are the ones that delve into the human condition, society, tolerance, and more. My work goes beyond mere entertainment; it’s about sparking thoughts, challenging norms, and provoking conversations about vital issues. Through performance and storytelling, I aim to make a lasting impact on society, using my art as a powerful tool for change.
In a world where creativity and mentorship come together, my journey is proof that the most meaningful projects aren’t just about artistry; they leave behind a legacy of inspiration and change. My path has been defined by a deep love for storytelling, a commitment to nurturing emerging talent, and a belief that meaningful projects can shape not only careers but also society itself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey is a testament to the idea that versatility is key in this industry. I’ve worn many hats, from screenwriter to author, actor to director/producer, and even occasional cinematographer. It all began with a childhood stint as a model and some commercials. However, it was during my teenage years that I realized my true calling—to make and be art.
As an actor, I’ve always aimed to embody characters authentically. Instead of passing judgment on them, I seek to understand their beliefs and experiences. My approach revolves around the pursuit of truth in every role, whether on screen or during auditions. It’s a dedication to authenticity that has shaped my career. A member of SAG-AFTRA, I know I’m part of something greater, a community of artists striving to make their mark in the world.
In my role as a screenwriter, my mission is clear—to craft stories that I would eagerly consume as an audience member. I’m drawn to narratives that challenge me, sometimes even forcing me to reevaluate my own convictions. When I write for others, I pledge to support their vision while infusing my creative perspective, ensuring a harmonious collaboration.
Directing, producing, and occasionally serving as a cinematographer, I’ve embraced every facet of filmmaking. My background in on-screen performance and behind-the-scenes work has granted me a unique lens through which I view the craft. I take pride in being an actor’s director, understanding the intricacies of character development, and the depth required to breathe life into them.
My journey led me to recently launch Robert X. Golphin Entertainment, a platform aimed at championing innovative content for both screen and stage. Our endeavors extend beyond traditional media, encompassing live performances, masterclasses, workshops, and more. Our mission is to expand horizons, shatter barriers, and celebrate the richness of cultural diversity within the arts.
As we look to the future, Robert X. Golphin Entertainment is open to collaborative and sponsored unions, eager to leave a lasting mark on the world of entertainment. My portfolio boasts feature films, TV pilots, short films, documentaries, talk shows, and scripted digital series. I’ve also been fortunate to contribute to a range of film, new media, theater, and television projects, wearing various hats in the process.
I’ve had the privilege of receiving nearly 50 awards and nominations, with my work showcased at numerous national and international film festivals. My educational journey, including an MFA in Screenwriting, a BA in Theatre and Film, and a Diploma in Creative Writing, has been instrumental in shaping my artistic perspective.
In conclusion, my journey in the entertainment industry has been nothing short of transformative. It’s a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the willingness to explore diverse roles within the creative realm. As I look ahead, I’m excited about the possibilities that lie on the horizon, eager to continue my exploration of the ever-evolving world of entertainment. I’m still leaping, crawling, and climbing; the journey goes on.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think one of the fundamental things that non-creatives may not fully grasp is just how vital opportunities, support, and encouragement are to us creatives. It’s not about entitlement, but rather about understanding that these things are like oxygen for our artistic souls.
I’m at my happiest when I’m in my element—whether it’s on a film set, hunched over my laptop, or sharing the beauty of the arts through teaching. And while we do appreciate it when people buy our work, often all we’re asking for is a simple click on a link to watch what we’ve poured our hearts into. Leave a comment, tell us what you liked, or didn’t like. It means the world to us.
Sometimes, though, it seems like non-creatives only pay attention when a creative happens to be someone famous. It’s like our efforts only matter when they’re validated by celebrity status. But what they might not realize is that all art is real. Every piece represents countless hours, days, months, even years of dedication. It’s time spent away from loved ones and festivities, all for the sake of our craft. And we creatives must always validate ourselves.
Non-creatives might not always view our creative journey as a legitimate profession, especially if we aren’t raking in hefty paychecks. But what they may not understand is that we’re driven by passion and the belief that what we do matters. It’s not a hobby; it’s a calling, a vocation that we pour our hearts and souls into.
Our creative process can be a bit of a mystery to them as well. They might not get why we need solitude, why we need to be lost in thought, to conjure, to execute. Our art is an extension of ourselves, and sometimes it’s the only way we can truly express our emotions and perspectives. We can be weird and moody, but it’s all part of the process. We don’t always fit into the mold of standard communication, and that’s okay—it’s our art that does the talking.
Non-creatives might offer well-intentioned advice to pursue a more stable profession, not understanding that for us, being creative is not a choice but a necessity. Being told that our dreams are unrealistic or that we should follow a safer path can be disheartening. What we need most is support and encouragement, not naysayers.
And perhaps most importantly, they may not fully realize the impact of their words and actions. Even though they mean well, their unintentional mockery can make us feel inadequate or emasculated. We’re sensitive about what we do because it’s deeply personal, and a simple acknowledgment, a prayer, or even just a smile can go a long way in fueling our creative spirits. So, while our journey as creatives might seem elusive to non-creatives, a little understanding and support can bridge that gap and make all the difference.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just want to share with the world what I believe is God’s gift to me – being an artist. I’ll admit, I don’t always understand his timing or the places he guides me to or keeps me away from. But as I continue to pursue my artistic career, whenever I hit those low points, I cling to the faith that another stepping stone is just around the corner.
What keeps me laser-focused is the opportunity to spark conversations and contribute to change through my art. It’s a driving force for me.
Of course, I can’t do this alone. I’m fortunate to have some loved ones, friends, colleagues, and representation who are an amazing support system in my life, and always there to remind me of my potential if I’m feeling down.
And every now and then, it feels like the universe gives me a nudge in the right direction. I’ll never forget this one time, in the most unexpected place – a Dollar General of all places. The cashier, a complete stranger, somehow sensed that I was connected to the entertainment world and offered words of encouragement. It was like the universe saying, ‘Keep going, you’re on the right path!’
So, as I continue to pursue my art and strive for even greater success, I do it not only for myself but for all those who believe in me, for the strangers who become my unexpected champions, and for the incredible potential of art to create positive change in our world. It’s a journey filled with wonder, challenges, and boundless hope, and I’m grateful for every step of it.
