We were lucky to catch up with Robert Mahor recently and have shared our conversation below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Robert Mahor, and I was born and raised in the Philippines. Now, I happily call Austin, Texas, my home. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had a passion for events. I loved decorating our house for every occasion and getting involved in all the planning. Those early experiences ignited a spark in me, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in this field. Thankfully, I’m living that dream!
I currently work as an Event Sales Manager at Fairmont Austin, one of the top hotels in downtown Austin. It’s an incredible opportunity that allows me to combine my love for events with my skills in hospitality. In addition to that, I run my own balloon decoration business, Dreams & Bubbles.
At Dreams & Bubbles, I specialize in creating beautiful balloon garlands, backdrops, and unique decorations for all kinds of celebrations. What I’m most proud of is how my hobby turned into a thriving business that brings joy to people’s special moments. I take great pride in my artistry and the personalized service I offer to each client, ensuring that every event feels unique and memorable.
One of the main things I want people to know about me is that I’m passionate about making every occasion special. I believe that events are more than just gatherings; they’re opportunities to create lasting memories. With Dreams & Bubbles, my goal is to bring that magic to life through vibrant and creative balloon designs. I love being part of those joyful moments and helping others celebrate their milestones in style!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One big lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that everything has to be perfect for an event to be a success. Growing up, I always thought every detail needed to be flawless. I remember decorating for one of my clients and I was stressing out over every little thing—like making sure every balloon was in the right spot.
There was one event in particular where I was so caught up in making everything perfect that I completely forgot to enjoy the process and trust my own abilities. It was a real wake-up call for me, reminding me that the joy of creating should be just as important as the final result.
When I started my career in hospitality and launched my business, Dreams & Bubbles, I realized that while details matter, what really counts is the joy and connection created during those moments. It’s about celebrating life and making memories, not just checking off a list.
Now, I embrace the idea that imperfections can add to the charm of an event. This shift has helped me be more present and enjoy the journey, both as an event manager and a balloon artist. I focus on bringing happiness to my clients, and that’s what truly makes my work rewarding!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story that really highlights my resilience happened when I was just starting my balloon decoration business, Dreams & Bubbles. My best friend asked me to decorate for her baby shower, and I was so excited to take on this special project for her.
A few days before the shower, though, I hit a big snag—a shipment of balloons I needed got delayed. Panic set in as I realized I might not be able to create the fun and festive atmosphere I had promised.
Instead of letting stress take over, I took a moment to breathe and reminded myself that I could figure this out. I reached out to local suppliers and got creative with my ideas. It meant a lot of late nights and a bit of scrambling, but I was determined to make it happen.
On the day of the baby shower, I was nervous but hopeful. As I set up, I realized that my quick adjustments had added some unique touches that worked beautifully. When my best friend walked in and saw the decorations, her face lit up with joy. That moment made all the hard work worth it. It taught me that setbacks are part of the journey and that resilience is about adapting and finding solutions. Most importantly, it reaffirmed my love for creating special moments for the people I care about.
