We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Diaz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robert , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Well I’ve always had a love for music but not just one type of genre almost every type. I first wanted to become a dj from always seeing my two mentors Dj Ruben and Dj Birdman djing at various bars across San Antonio. Just being able to see the crowd of people dancing and having a great time not having a care in the world was always fascinating to me. All because the dj had control of them having a good time cause their favorite song was playing. Eventually I wanted To provide that joy and satisfaction of being the one to be able to provide and entertain people. Especially when I see People walk in from a bad day at work and watching them leave with a smile. All the people who come up to me and tell me how good I am And how much fun they had.

Robert , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My passion for music started at a young age. I enjoyed going to concerts and watching how the performers could entertain thousands of people. Growing up I would watch my uncle DJ and could tell you the title and artist of almost any song within the first few seconds. During the recent pandemic, I was able to spend time at home and focus on my hobby, mixing music. When life began getting back to normal, I landed My first public gig and I knew that night that this was something I wanted to do for a long time. I love that I can help people express themselves through music. They can tell me how they feel and not know what songs to play or dedicate and I just feel with them and I am able to create music that is meaningful to my customer. I am most proud when I see people walk into the place that I’m DJing at frustrated after a long work week and when they leave, they are smiling and happy because of the music I provided. What sets me apart from other DJs is that I cater to my customers and community. With my vast variety of music and knowledge, I am able to cater to any age from the elderly to the youngest generation. I even Have Disney music I mix For the youngest crowd.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Yes. This particular one was a tough lesson for me when I first started djing. That was I had To stop playing music that only I liked and learn to play everybody’s music. for example i wasn’t very knowledgeable in a lot of hip hop and Spanish music but I’ve gotten so many request for that type of music. I went Home and downloaded all the music i can get in that genre. Spent weeks learning the style of music and eventually learned to play everyone’s style of music which also made me start liking that genre of music. I’ve still got more to learn but I’m getting the hang of it.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to one day play at a big music festival. Either in Miami or Vegas I want To be a famous dj like Steve aoki or marshmallow
