We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rikilee King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rikilee below.
Alright, Rikilee thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Get Lucky Photography, LLC, or simply GLP for short.
Well, I am a wholehearted believer in lucky pennies. I’m always on the lookout for them wherever we go, and even considered creating a photo collection of every penny I find. But the moments when I stumble upon them unexpectedly bring the most joy as if the universe knew I needed a little bit of luck.
It’s not just the coin sporting our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, that I’m a firm believer in. I also believe that the full moon brings out our wild side, that a pinch of lavender means good fortune and love, and that a good book or photograph is like bottling up time travel. Our name reflects our belief that something magical and beautiful is always waiting to be discovered, even in the subtlest of places.
It’s always so fun to hear people who hire us say something like, “We feel like we got lucky finding you!”. There are few things more special to me than knowing I could help someone remember such an amazing moment, feeling, in their lives for times to come.

Rikilee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Rikilee, the main shooter and majority owner of GLP!
We are a portrait and wedding photography team based in Southwest Michigan, but always ready to travel for love.
We have a serious passion for capturing the most special moments of people’s lives.
GLP genuinely invests in our clients, because we believe to tell their story best, we have to connect and be a little vulnerable. We care about their engagement, wedding, marriage, family memories, and most importantly, ABOUT THEM!
My partner in business and life, is my husband, Josh. Josh is an empathetic person, but he prefers to stay behind the scenes. He’s an expert problem-solver whose technical skills are second to none. He’s my rock and my go-to person when I run into any technical issues. Without him, I would have probably set our computers on fire by now!
For me, I’m more of the outgoing, bubbly, and silly half of the duo. I have a deep love of nostalgia through music and movies. I pride myself on being empathetic and genuine, and I love to connect with people by listening to them and understanding their needs. I’m the girl you can count on to laugh and cry with you and your guests on your special day.
While we share many similar interests and values, we have distinct personalities that complement each other, making us the best business team
It all started as a hobby, something I’ve always loved to do. From there it evolved into a full-time business, something so important to me that I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Photography has always been something I’ve adored. From being young and photographing my stuffed animals to convincing my friends and family to let me take their photos. After a gap of time without photography in my life, I was gifted a beautiful starter camera. I began sharing images and after a while, I was no longer trying to convince people to let me photograph them, they WANTED me to! I realized it could become a career path and I set my goal of investing in education and equipment to grow and offer more to those choosing to hire me.
I was working in a corporate 9-5 kind of job that just wasn’t fulfilling me. I would be there daydreaming about photography and making that my full-time journey. Then one day I just decided, it was time. It’s now or possibly never and I couldn’t fathom that. I said my goodbyes to the corporate job and told my partner it was time. Together we took our DBA license to an LLC and went full-time.
It’s not easy, it takes so much patience and sometimes feels discouraging. If you’re someone wanting to go full-time, just know that you can, it is possible.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Full transparency, social media can be tough for me. There are so many talented artists out there, with gorgeous creations and it can be hard to not fall into a comparison loop. What I learned is that you have to show up for yourself, and appreciate those who do support you, whether you have 100 followers or 10,000. Most importantly though, remember that if you can’t or don’t show up on social for a while, IT IS OKAY! As long as you’re doing your best, you’re making progress. As long as you’re giving to those who hire you what you promised, be honest with them, and ensure their happiness is a priority, you’ll be more than okay.
