We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Richard Grob a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Richard, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
After doing my Master Degrees in Los Angeles, I did some internships as a video editor ( especially making Trailers for movies). Unfortunately everything stops due to Covid. So after few months, I decided to go back to my country in Switzerland.
After an internship in the marketing, my best friend introduced me to a person who was looking a video editor. We spoke a lot about movies and our dream goals : living from our work.
Since then we work together in his production company ‘Harmonik Pictures’ in Geneva.
I knew from day one I would face some challenges because I enter in a new world where I have to be my own boss, always finding a solution or our company will not work. It’s a scary journey but after all this is what I was looking for.

Richard, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When I was a kid, they discovered I’ve got a “Dysphasia” : a brain condition that makes a person have difficulties producing and sometimes understanding language. I couldn’t talk a lot so I decided to express myself by drawing. By doing this, I’ve earnt a lot imaginations, so I decided to do something relate to the art.
By growing, my passion for telling stories by images was becoming more important. So I decided to go in Paris in a cinema school and then doing my Master Degree in Los Angeles.
During my journeys in both schools, I discovered the world of the Post Production especially in editing. These schools introduced me new people which I could work with them later by editing there films.
I thought having a Dysphasia would be a curse in my life… This is what society told me : I would not go far in my life… But Cinema showed me something different : yes you can go far but in a different way.
A story can change a life to a person. I imagine myself as a character in a long movie and then I was thinking of myself : what can make the audience love my story ? Everything is going good in my life : too boring. Try to accomplish my goal alone by not giving up and caring my curse : I think it’s more interesting. That’s why I never give up.
I can say I’m proud of my accomplishment : by working in a startup company.
My curse became my help because it gave me imaginations and then create a story in differents ways. That’s why with my clients, I would never said ‘we can’t do that’. I would said ‘What if…”
A story can change a life’s person, I believe in that thanks to my experience. And this is what I want to do for the others : to impact them.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Society often encourages the idea that perfection is attainable and desirable in all aspects of life. We must always be perfect in their work, appearance, relationships, and more.
Unlearning perfectionism can be a gradual process, and it often involves practicing self-compassion, setting realistic goals, and reframing negative thoughts about yourself and your abilities.
This is what I learn with my dysphasia. Many people told me to learn form the others who are perfect, who hasn’t any disadvantage. But maybe people also have to learn from us, who has anotherpoint of view…

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being an artist allows you to think outside the box and break free from conventional constraints. You have the freedom to explore your imagination and experiment with different styles and mediums.
But also we have the freedom to work independently and build their own careers. They can choose their projects, set their schedules, and have creative control over their work.
While being an artist or creative person can come with challenges and uncertainties, the rewards can be deeply fulfilling. It allows individuals to connect with their inner selves, share their unique perspective with the world, and contribute to the cultural tapestry of society.
