We were lucky to catch up with Renee Rose recently and have shared our conversation below.
Renee, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Advice for authors usually focuses on the nuts and bolts of the business: honing your craft, developing your social media and newsletters, launching a book, but if you haven’t mastered your own energy, nothing else matters. Becoming an energetic match for a bestseller, for success, for a huge readership, for hitting the New York Times list–that is the secret to pulling those things in with ease. For aligning with the future you want to create.
Renee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Renee Rose, 15-time USA Today Bestselling Romance Author and self-made millionaire. Eleven years ago I started writing with a big dream–hitting 7 figures a year from my books. For the past four years, I’ve hit that goal and I attribute my success to an abundance mindset. I wrote the book Write to Riches: 7 Steps to Receiving Abundance from Your Books and I coach authors on achieving their dreams.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Conquering that sense of unworthiness or imposter’s syndrome in a business that is completely flooded with competition (and learning to not view other authors as competition) has been key. I remember the moment when I realized that a big-time author, who advertised heavily, charged more and promoted her books like they were all New York Times bestsellers was not any different from me. Her books were no better than mine. The difference was that she treated them like they were. She wasn’t hiding, hoping people found her book and loved it. She valued herself and her books and promoted them with the energy of deserving and self-worth.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Like most writers, I’ve always walked around with stories running in my head. To get paid for those stories feels like being paid to breathe, or walk or eat. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of work that goes into writing and marketing a book, but the sense of being paid for what you love is deep and real.
