We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Renata Cuellar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Renata thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Earning a full-time living in the creative work is definitely possible! I feel that each career journey has its challenges. The art field is one of them! It is most certainly not easy. However, I feel in this day in age it is more possible.

Renata, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Renata Cuellar and I am a Professional Artist. I specialize in custom artworks for both commercial and residential spaces. Delivering high-quality paintings on canvas, embellished prints, indoor and outdoor murals, faux painting, custom personalized items and design work.
I got into my industry at a very young age. When I was six years old I began oil painting. I attended the Rosyln School of Painting for many years. Then, I started to sell my artwork that was either on canvas or painted objects. I would set up a table and sell my art outside. People would purchase them. They would also ask me for more customized work. I was very young at the time, but I began painting more objects and receiving more orders for custom work. Growing up in my town, everyone new me as The Artist. In my tweens, I received my first commission, to paint an outdoor porch with blossoming flowers all year around.
I kept putting my artwork out into the Universe and continued to receive more orders.
Each artwork or mural made for someone, I started to notice how happy I made people feel through my artwork, creations and designs. This joy motivated me even more to continue to take on larger projects. I persevered. My artwork evolved. I learned different methods, invented a few methods, kept growing my artistic repertoire.
The artwork each passing year began to flourish and so did the creativity.
Currently, the projects keep growing. The artworks have become larger. It is really amazing how much art can completely transform an environment!
I think what sets me apart from others is the connection I make with my Clients mixed with uniqueness in skill and creativity.
I am really proud about the integrity of my work.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an Artist and creative is personally seeing how much happiness my artwork brings to people. I have had Clients cry from joy after seeing their custom piece made.
I see artwork as a form of life. Yes, it is captured on the surface it is painted on, but it breathes its’ own life. When we view it, it changes our chemistry. It makes us feel something. It beautifies our environment, lifts our spirits and enhances our space.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Every now and then a non-creative will struggle to understand my journey, I think because of old programing. No ones fault, Creativity is innate. It is something one is born with and a born Artist cannot escape it. It’s a part of them. I suppose if you are a creative and and a non-creative may be struggling to understand you, keep moving towards accomplishing your goals. Maybe use it as fuel to steadfastly knock your goals out of the water!
