We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Remondia Atwater. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Remondia below.
Remondia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
After being approached by.a manager at Ashley Stewart in Macon,Ga former Colonial Mall to participate in their local fashion event. I earned modeling by enrolling in a model group and researching plus size modeling in the Atlanta scene. If, I knew then, versus what I know now, I would have invested into a licensed legitimate modeling agency. The skills that were most essential were proper runway walking, posing classes, makeup tips, Model etiquette and industry networking.
Remondia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My clients are boutiques like ABS Fine Arts and Apparel, House of Deranis and other important designers who chose me to represent them. Those brands use me show diversity and size inclusion as an Ambassador for their clothing brands. I’m a proud grandmother, mom and Thyroid Cancer survivor. I’m creatively talented and sew my own designs by restructuring thrifted and gently used clothing into reimaged looks. I’m the founder of Faye’s Fashion Lab which established a plus size model Troupe. The 2016 American Beauties Plus National Woman Queen. Which lead me being chosen an Ambassador force for The Plus Positive Organization http://www.pluspositive.org and being featured on MTV the Real World Atlanta 2019, Body Love Campaign as a panelist speaking on self love and embracing your body. Blessed to travel internationally to Africa allowed my volunteering to provide donations for The Angels Montessori School in Lagos, Nigeria, from The Classy Living Society Organization, [email protected] While in Africa, I was chosen as the first American plus model for The Lush Beauties of Lagos, Nigeria.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When strangers and supporters tell me , I’ve inspired them to have confidence to wear clothing that shows their body. Plus size women had been conditioned to cover their bodies. We’re now loving all our Curves, fupas, giggly arms, thick thighs and more. I glad to see the self love and higher self esteem in my plus size sister. My heart is joyful being a positive influence on others.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Soon after starting modeling, I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and Lupus which triggered other autoimmune disorders.. Depression set in due to constant pain. Then i lost my crown and glory (hair). I’ve had over 20 surgeries. Through my faith, grace and mercy. I keep thriving.
