We were lucky to catch up with Reem Abousaif recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Reem, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have worked on was Fearless During the online master’s degree program at Harvard University, I had the privilege of working on a profoundly meaningful project. This intimate photojournalistic documentary followed the journey of a remarkable female doctor who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Over six emotionally charged months, I had the opportunity to shadow her, witnessing firsthand the struggles, triumphs, and poignant moments that unfolded as she navigated the harrowing path of treatment and faced an uncertain future alongside her loving husband and two daughters.
This project delved far beyond traditional academic work, immersing me in the raw realities of life and death, hope and despair. The experience was a profound reminder of the fragility of human existence and the indomitable strength and resilience that can emerge in the face of adversity.
As a photojournalist, I sought to capture the essence of this woman’s journey, her unwavering determination, and the unyielding support she received from her family. Each photograph I took aimed to convey the emotions, both heart-wrenching and uplifting, that permeated their lives. I wanted to create a visual narrative that powerfully communicates the challenges faced by patients and their loved ones, shedding light on the often unseen aspects of the cancer experience.
Throughout the process, I bore witness to the daily battles against physical and emotional pain, the sacrifices made, and the profound love that sustained them. It was a deeply humbling and transformative experience that forever altered my perspective on life, empathy, and the power of storytelling.
This project also reinforced the importance of raising awareness about breast cancer and the need for continued research and support for patients and their families. By sharing this deeply personal and intimate documentary, I hope to foster understanding, compassion, and a call to action within the audience, encouraging them to engage with the realities of this disease and contribute to the ongoing fight against it.
Ultimately, this project serves as a testament to the power of storytelling, the resilience of the human spirit, and the transformative potential of visual media. Through my lens, I sought to honor the courage and strength of this remarkable woman and her family while shedding light on the broader challenges faced by those affected by breast cancer.
As I reflect on this project, I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared in their journey, learned from their experiences, and contributed to a greater understanding of the human condition. I hope that this documentary will inspire others to embrace empathy, support cancer research, and cherish every precious moment of life.

As a creative artist and photographer, I aim to leave a lasting mark through powerful, thought-provoking images. I strive to capture moments that evoke emotions, spark conversations, and inspire reflection. I aim to create art that carries purpose and significance, transcending visual representation to impact viewers profoundly.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Reflecting on my journey, I realize the immense value of having a mentor earlier in my career to fast-track my progress and elevate my photography skills. Recently, I had the opportunity to join the esteemed headshot crew led by Peter Hurley. Through intensive classes and hands-on training, my headshot skills have reached heights I once deemed unimaginable. Looking back, I regret not pursuing this path sooner, as it has been a transformative experience that has propelled my career to new levels.
